Re: New MiSTer hardware board

I don't think there is plenty of alternative to program the Cyclone V using open-source tools. It seems that if I replace the Cyclone V by Artix-7 fpga + external CPU, it would be possible to use the SymbiFlow open source toolchain. As the current PSX core development is based on Artix-7 fpga dev board, it seems that this target worth a look, but w...

Re: The Result of My Search for a Great MiSTer Display

I also have a 1200p monitor and i'm very happy with it. But as mentioned by "Insert Disk Two", the games rarely used the 240p resolution but only a part of it. Genesis games will use 224p resolution, so you won't get a full screen image in 5x mode.... It's a bit frustrating to get 80 lines of black bars. It would be nice to get the crop f...

Re: New MiSTer hardware board

NxP transmitters seem to still be available, and the datasheets only say that you need a license to use them "in equipment that complies with the HDMI standard". Analog devices and Silicon image devices are locked if you're not an HDMI adopter. I did not plan to use the NxP parts as they seems to be tagged as obsolete ( https://www.arrow...

Re: New MiSTer hardware board

There are a few vendors out there that have taken a similar approach to HDMI, i.e. putting an HDMI-compatible socket on their product and never actually advertising it as "HDMI". You can't purchase hdmi transmitter components unless you're a HDMI adopter (See https://www.analog.com/en/products/adv7535.html ) I agree with you on the...

I use it 2 or 3 times a week, mostly on Genesis TGFX16 and NES cores. I love the YM2612 output sound quality !

Impressive work ! I really like the way you done it ;) I also choose to route on a 6 Layer stackup with 3 routing layers. Here is my stackup : 1614014652_1824_22022021_522x327.png I just finished to validate my 80 ohm diff / 40 ohm single calculation for outer and inner layers. Re: New MiSTer hardware board

I will go on with Cyclone V directly instead of the Exor module. The first important and most difficult step after the creation of the FPGA component will be to do the DDR3 routing with KiCad. Now we will have to be patient, the next tens of hours may be concentrated on this part of the layout !! Luckily the new features of kicad 6 are really promi...

Re: DIY cartridge reader add-on board

I might be alone on this but I think the best option would be to turn off or remove the RAM board and physically connect and use the hardware in the cartridge. Maybe there's already a core or branch of a core available now that is expecting a cartridge be connected to the mister IO rather than the RAM board? I'm designing a new hardware board dedi...

It's a little crazy project, isn't it? However, having a Cyclone V card for Mister in mini-ITX format and open hardware, that seems to be a good idea. I've already started so why not go all the way now

Re: New MiSTer hardware board

Some fresh news! We have done a lot of testing and we are in the process of developing a hardware prototype in ITX format using KiCad. It's a long process and we are currently in the process of seeing if we can put a CycloneV directly on it. Using KiCad to route DDR3 and SDRAM will be an interesting challenge! One of the problems encountered is bei...

Re: 1920x1920 1:1 Monitors

See Eizo EV2730Q-BK specification > input lag = 17ms : https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/fd63575 It's a very interesting solution but these screens are very expensive and the DE10nano board will not output 1920x1920 signal. However, some people have had success with an image resolution of 1920x1440. I would pay for a 1: 1 1440x1440 scr...

I just received the Exor SoM development kit ! EXor-eval-kit.png I have a lot of work to do until the end of September but I can't wait to start looking at what we can do with it. Super-Hang On sprite display issue with sprite limit option

I noticed some sprite display issue with Super-Hang On played on sega genesis core when I set the sprite limit option to high. The signs on the side of the road are visible across the hill. You can see it very well in the turns. Here is some picture is took with my phone : 1599636150-0922-09092020-1058x503.png 1599636158-0922-09092020-1037x504.png ...

Re: New MiSTer hardware board

The Exor module has 1GB of DDR3 in 32bit, so I will stay on it for the moment. I will try to not design this board like NovTech did !!
As I would like to be compatible with current cores, I would take any advice on the elements that are the most critical and that should not be changed :)

Re: New MiSTer hardware board

Rather than making an entire replacement board for the DE-10, why not design a Mini-ITX board that can host the DE-10? The Mini-ITX board could have a powered USB hub with audio, video, and USB ports on the back, and a way to use an SFX power supply (or DC adapter) to power everything. Then the DE-10/MiSTer could be mounted on the board and placed...

Re: MiSTer host hardware candidate: 110k LE Cyclone V board for ~$30 (Chameleon96)

Chances are good that this is a pricing mistake, but I would love to be wrong. If we could somehow get a MiSTer compatible setup with all cores for under $100 (i.e. this plus a custom SDRAM board) that would be bonkers! 31$ is a very low price for this kind of dev board. There is a good chance that this evaluation board is sold well below ...

Re: New MiSTer hardware board

Not really sure about reducing the DDR3 ram part. I have the feeling the MiSTer framework is already using the 1GB ram to its limit. At least when Soundfonts for Midi output is used. Also everything framebuffer related needs ram - some more is the way to go not less imho. Ok I will then only ask to remove the embedded 4GB flash if we only c...

Re: New MiSTer hardware board

I have received some interesting feedback from Exor. I will seriously consider using their SoM to do a fully featured DE-10 Nano clone. I'll consider the mini-itx size first as we could easily fit in some really nice case like this one : PHNXTOEM Here is the SoM I plan to use. This module will allow us to reduce the overall board complexity (number...

Replay 2 board is based on the Ultrascale parts and should be ready in next months, and I don't want to competing unnecessarily with the nice job he/they done. We could try to lower the overall design cost by using a Cyclone V system on module, and try to design a nice motherboard that'll use no more than 4/6 layer PCB stack. For example the microS...

Re: New MiSTer hardware board

Your budget solution price tag is true for users that only want DE10 + SDRAM, and I understand that this is the main reason why the DE10 nano was chosen. The RPi or ITX-mini form factor are some interesting ideas, i'll have to think about it. I agree with you about the overall development and board cost. I already designed 8-10 layers pcb boards an...

The issue is identified on the github core :

I get the same issue with Psycho pinball (on the main screen after the short introduction).

New MiSTer hardware board

Hello, I'm a french hardware engineer and I love MiSTer project. I built my own setup using the DE-10 nano board with some RAM and custom USB boards and I would love designing a custom MiSTer hardware based on the same Cyclone V chip. I know that we couldn't beat the current price of the DE10 Nano board, as the chip 5CSEBA6U23I7N cost more than 200...
