I think the analog IO should not be a dead end..
I feel that if we put our minds to it, with a little bit of effort we can make a design that overcomes (or at least can deal with and minimize) some of the issues, besides what is inherently out side of our control with the MiSTer.

I would start with removing the sdram, io board, and hub, and see if it boots via hdmi by itself.
If so, it's likely one of those devices causing an issue.
If it doesn't boot at that point, it's likely the sdcard, or (even more unlikely) the power supply.
