Re: The State of DACs for the MiSTer and Direct Video
I had one more test for the day, I tested one of the Mister Addon's Analog I/O boards. To be clear there appears to be two versions of the Ref 6.1 analog I/O board, on the dac test results sheet, the Mister Multisystem shows what the what I call "high" version looks like. The Mister Addons board in the sheet shows the "low" vers...

Re: The State of DACs for the MiSTer and Direct Video
One AIO i would like to see tested is the analogue output on the Ironclad ITX board as Roberto stated he spent some time getting the levels right. From what i have used so far its the best analogue picture i have seen for MiSTer and one of the cleanest using a MD2 RGB scart cable Did he ever post his results? would love to see. Also would love to ...

Re: The State of DACs for the MiSTer and Direct Video
Did you test the AG6200 DAC with hdmi_limited=2 set in MiSTer.ini? My understanding is that it was added to address this exact issue. I'd encourage people to buy standards-compliant products regardless, but if a workaround is available, that should be mentioned. As far as I know that was added for DACs that were not AG6200 based .... Not true, it ...

Do you have a link to this one? Yeah sure https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08HXRQGXM Those look identical to the Rankie ones, and the whole point of the article was to show that they are not the best quality out there. I noticed the StarTech HD2VGAE2 which is a ~$30 one uses a different chipset "IT6695FN", anyone have any experience with tha...

Re: The State of DACs for the MiSTer and Direct Video
My biggest gripe is when people develop and sell products and not tell people the product is not meeting reference standards or show test results as I think every product should be properly tested and run at reference levels, that's just a given and no excuses there. I don't know which products you are referring to, but I'm pretty sure the ones fr...

Re: The State of DACs for the MiSTer and Direct Video
Has the ringing problem of the HD Fury 3 been fixed? I avoided it for that reason, currently using a Benfei cable. The Vention adapter looks like it would be good enough for me, might get that if it comes back in stock. Curious what ringing your referring too.. I haven't notice any issues myself. Are their any examples of what it is? Happy to take...

Re: The State of DACs for the MiSTer and Direct Video
It's a nice write up, thanks a lot. I think the "No one should use the AG6200 based DACs however unless you just can’t use anything else and the world depends on you getting a video signal of some kind." is a bit of an overdramatization though. I've been using one for over a year when I first got a MiSTer (with high quality TV sets), jus...

The State of DACs for the MiSTer and Direct Video
There has been a lot more discussion and questions around Direct Video lately, especially with the possibility of more Mister setups going dual sdram. With that said there is also a lot of bad information out there about the DACs themselves and the effects it has on the video output. DACs are a small but very important component and people deserve ...

Re: VGA Mode Changing for 720x400 and 640x400
Anyone having issues getting the new mode lines that leverage the CVT option to work. Trying to load the top300 (updated to the latest version) and it never fully loads the game menu. sometimes it gets stuck on the loading screen with the purple box and yellow loading... text. Have seen garbled stuff on the screen before too.. its so odd how these ...

Re: New HDR Settings
I really don't know why you guys have so much troubles with the HLG-HDR colors. It's 8bit HDR and fully backward compatible with SDR. This is how it should look (with no special settings to colors in the Mister.ini) on a LG C9. Using "game mode" with "Dynamic Tone Mapping" enabled. Saturation level is up to your own preferences...

Re: New HDR Settings
I have been testing out the new HDR mode on the Mister with my LG C1 and LG E7. I have been using the HLG mode and have BFI enabled on my LG, the rest of the settings are following pretty standard configurations, pretty much everything is grayed out anyways... all the power management and stuff like that is turned off as per best practices. What I ...

Re: New HDR Settings
Can also confirm that HLG is backwards-compatible, looked perfectly normal on an SDR monitor. Did you confirm with a color calibration? I will believe HDR works only when I see a side by side of a calibration done in SDR then flipped to HDR and it maintains near perfect tone mapping... The retrotink5X HDR mode is way off, at least in HDR10 mode, m...

Re: Direct Video Questions
I am always open to new information but I am not sure what you are saying here. Limited range by definition has black starting at 7.5 IRE, so if you look at an oscilloscope you will see a pedestal that will show a black signal from the source starting at ~50mV. With a broadcast grade pattern generator set to limited range with RGB you will see a p...

Re: Direct Video Questions
You seem have the assumption that DACs should output a pedestal with limited range which is wrong. If the DAC properly supports Limited range then 0-255 and 16-235 will result in the same mV output. I am always open to new information but I am not sure what you are saying here. Limited range by definition has black starting at 7.5 IRE, so if you l...

Re: Direct Video Questions
Thought I would post this DAC analysis I have been working on here.. https://tinyurl.com/crt-hdmi2vgadacs Right now I believe there is only one DAC that is truly accurate for the Mister. Based on my analysis only the HDFury3 matches closely to the reference RGB mV levels. DACs based on the AG6200 are the worst, and if you wanted to use limited colo...

Re: Anyone tried a Nintendo Super Scope 6 ?
I am not sure what I am doing wrong here, I have verified my Scope and Receiver work fine on my SNES. On the Mister I think I have tried every combination. My Receiver is plugged into the SNAC port through an adapter that I know works fine as SNES controllers work through it. I have setup the scope in the hardware config, assigned it to Joy 1 and J...

For the Thrustmaster, when you configure that in Windows does it save it to the device? Just wondering how that translates to the Mister as its obviously linux not windows.. But if you have it set to a specific setting let me know and ill see if I can try the same. I may try a gamepad and try assigning their analog sticks to the joystick axis. obvi...

Re: It’s 2022, What’s the Current State of Joystick Support?
So I tried to calibrate my TM T16000 stick and the new CH Flight Stick Pro (with a gamepad to usb adapter). Neither ended up working out, I couldn't get them setup in the Mister joystick setup. The TM could never map the Y axis it seems, and X was never quite right, the buttons mapped ok though. The CH Flight Stick was even worse, I couldn't map an...

Re: It’s 2022, What’s the Current State of Joystick Support?
I'll have to give Wing Commander a try. One weird thing I noticed in Decent was when in tried to use a gamepad, only X would work, but in the configuration section of the game I could press up (for Y) on the gamepad and it registered. However I couldn't actually move up and down when in game... But if I opened the mister menu moving up and down the...

Re: It’s 2022, What’s the Current State of Joystick Support?
I ordered a CH Flightstick Pro (will have to use a gameport to usb adapter), hoping that will help as my "new" joysticks don't work. Thrustmaster T.16000. Understand I would never get all the buttons or axis.. but was hoping at least X/Y and 4 buttons would work :( I have been trying to play Decent so that's my test game... But seeing as ...

It’s 2022, What’s the Current State of Joystick Support?
I am curious where the AO486 core is in terms of Joystick support and what others might be using? At a minimum it would be great to have at least 2axis support with 4 buttons but would be even better if a full Sidewinder 3D pro could be used! Really want to fire up some old sims and space shooters, like decent, swing, mech warrior if possible... What...

Re: Getting DOS to work with Direct_Video=1
So turns out this is was because I had direct_video=1, but unless your core is 240p or maybe 480i you should use direct_video for those cores as it will output normal over the HDMI port. So I just set that flag to turn off direct video when running the AO486 core.

Re: Getting DOS to work with Direct_Video=1
direct_video=1 on a0486 is designed for 240p i.e. SD TVs, hence the scanlines. forced_scandoubler=1 might fill it in to 480p but its just going to double the pixels, so you still aren't going to get the full 400p resolution of DOS text. Its been optimized to make 320x200 games look passible on a 240p SD TV. I wouldn't use it for your set if you wa...

Re: Getting DOS to work with Direct_Video=1
First you can try flipping Aspect Ratio & Scale in the Video menu Long story short: https://misterfpga.org/viewtopic.php?p=28578#p28578 Or you can read the whole thread. There's no ideal solution, it's all a bit of a hack. Aspect Ratio is the only one that seems to "function" with direct_video=1. But then it stretches it too wide and...

Getting DOS to work with Direct_Video=1
Has anyone figured out how to get DOS to display correctly when using direct_video=1 (HDMI to VGA). I have a 20L5 PVM which is designed to run 480P (640x480 60) just fine and it works with the analog vga output.. But when trying to use the direct_video hdmi output to vga, it is squished and interlaced. The odd thing is, the Mister is reporting its ...
