Re: Donkey Kong: Walking Sound Hack?

So wouldn't that mean that Mame is more accurate than Mister, at least on the Donkey Kong core :-( This is true of a lot of the classic arcade cores (usually sound issues). To be fair the MAME project has had 25+ years to get it right, and the analog sound engine was only introduced more recently, which greatly improved sound accuracy for some gam...

Re: Exidy Universal Game Board 2 core issues

For Mouse Trap all the animal sounds are missing, for example, when you turn into a dog there is "woof" sound, and then when you eat a cat there should be a "meow". Also when you eat the pellets there should be a "chomp" sound.

Re: 8bitdo controllers lose bluetooth sync after each MiSTer reboot

After going through the pairing process, turn off the controller then back on again. I don't know why it works, but it does for my M30 Pro. Used to have the same problem but read that same advice on here and sure enough now every time on start-up controller pairs right away.

Re: Jammix or Mistercade for JAMMA and HDMI

I'm stuck in a similar position, I want to get my DE-10 running in a Jamma cabinet but the MisterCade won't be available again for a couple months. Good to know the Jammix doesn't provide any video on the Jamma edge. I wish there was a no-frills Jamma adapter, maybe a MisterCade lite? I just want to get some games going in my Jamma cabinet without ...

Re: USB vs Jamma versatility: In some scenarios, is Jamma even worth it??

I thought a Jamma solution would be both more 'authentic' and basically lagless being directly wired and nothing lost from 'USB polling'. Imagine my surprise to see the RetroPad32 and iBuffalo 'beat' the jamma connection of a Mistercade [Granted, I and most people would not be able to notice such a tiny lag difference between 0.69 and 0.738]. How ...

Re: CraftyMech BitKit2 FPGA?

The BitKit project started back in 2016 with just a Nibbler hardware core. It then expanded over time to add more cores focused on classic 8bit games. Hardware wise it is not in the same ballpark as the DE-10, so you won't be seeing 16bit systems like CPS-1, Neo Geo, etc. It's a Jamma board targeted at arcade collectors (for instance no console or ...

Re: Tapper Arcade Video Resolution

If I remember right, the core has the option to output at VGA resolution (640x480), or native 15k 480i. Original Tapper hardware is 15k 480i, so if you are getting 240p that doesn't sound right.

Re: Galaxian Update

The rack noise for Galaxian is completely wrong, not even in the same ballpark. No idea why sine waves were used, even ancient versions of MAME did a better job.

I've owned multiple Galaxian pcbs over the years. There are subtle differences in that sound effect between boards, but the issue with the Galaxian core is not subtle.

Far cheaper to buy a used vintage Speak'n'Spell for $30-40 and de-solder the SC-01?

As you probably found out, no SC-01 in the Speak n Spell, and all the misc electronics that did have SC-01's have shot up in price on eBay too.

I did score an Intex Talker (Votrax clone) for $75 a couple years ago though.

Re: Grobda - Shield Button not Working?

I think I have worked out where the problem is. It seems that each game on the platform uses different IO controller chips and Grobda is the only one that expects button 2 in that particular location. It also seems that the IO chip is used in a bootup check, so the information being returned then will also be wrong (which may explain the '3' on se...

Re: Pac-Man Core

That's a good point, and I guess it would depend on if analog video output was used. I would assume with analog video (no frame buffer) that the output would be the 'emulated display', or 1:1 with the original hardware? If the output was upscaled (frame buffer) then there would be a measurable offset between the 'emulated' and 'real' display, which...

Re: Pac-Man Core

Pac-man definitely uses the vblank to trigger an IRQ. However, I'm not sure with the vsync ini setting if that changes the vertical blanking interval, or just the length of the vsync pulse?

Re: Pac-Man Core

The video linked above shows the difference between difficulty settings. On the original hardware there is a jumper that can be bridged that sets the difficulty and if I remember is read via the DIP switches. You should be able to change the difficulty using the DIP settings in the Mister menu. Checking MAME, it looks like it should be switch #7 on...

Re: Pac Man Junior?

Jr is basically Pac hardware with more RAM, and scrolling tile map, and iirc also larger graphic roms. That's off the top of my head, but I believe the hardware is similar enough that Jr would belong in the Pac core if it was added.

JROK ended up using samples. He implemented the SC-01 in FPGA, but concluded that without knowing the precise analog components used to mix phonemes, the result just didn't sound right.

Re: Galaxian Inaccurate Sound

Galaxian sound accuracy is apparently still an open question at this point, partly because it's not clear that all boards actually used the same component values. There's a lot of analog stuff in the sound hardware that might have been fudged with "close enough" resistors/capacitors in some production batches, not to mention potential is...
