How did the controllers work? Did you use the snac port or IO?

I made a MT32-pi using my pi 3 B v1.2 and looking at the data connectors made a db9 connector to the gpio pins on the pi. I get the mt32 option menu but only was able to hear some crackling on Loom for a sec. I then took the 5v power off the io board and just used usb power on the pi. Now I can't get any sound. I was thinking of getting a hat, but...
