Re: BIOS Freezing After Update On Mega CD

I did try to test my RAM modules but there were no defects. After all, it was working flawlessly with the previous SD card so there was no reason it would fail now. I originally fixed the problem by rolling back to a previous version of the core, 20230224, which confirmed at least that the issue wasn't the SD card either. However, after update 2024...

BIOS Freezing After Update On Mega CD

Hello, My issue is similar to the one posted some months ago , because I can get to the "space" screen and then the core freezes. If I try to reload the backup RAM, it displays the disc check message, and then it gets stuck on the loading screen forever. This happened after I updated my version from 20230224 to anything newer. The older c...

Re: Right Way to Create a Blank HDD With PCEm?

For the record, I managed to create a working HDD image from within MiSTer with the following instructions. You need a bootable MS-DOS floppy disk: 1. Open up a shell with F9 2. Navigate to the desired path 3. Run the following command: $ dd if=/dev/zero of=image.vhd bs=516096 count=N This will create a file named image.vhd which is about 2 * N MiB...

Re: PC Booters troubleshooting

Thanks JamesH, that was it. I am getting now an I/O error message now unfortunately but I believe it's a different issue altogether. Still no luck getting Zork to work. You can uninstall XTIDE if you go to the BIOS menu, try to change the ROM file and then press Backspace at the file selection dialog. You'll have to reload your core for the changes...

Re: PC Booters troubleshooting

Zork is indeed single-sided, and I got the Pirates! from Archive.org (two 360k disk images).

I haven't tried the micro8088 BIOS, what feature does it offer compared to the legacy BIOSes?

PC Booters troubleshooting

Hello, I've had some troubles running certain PC Booter games on the PCXT core:

  • Zork boots fine, but it fails to detect the write-only protection (as shown in the photo).
  • Sid Meier's Pirates! (without copy-protection) doesn't boot at all. The same disk image does boot in DOSBox though.

Has anyone ever had the same issues?

It's a BIOS limitation. From the core's documentation:

pcxt wrote:

On IBM 5160 or Tandy 1000 only 360Kb images work well.
On Micro8088 only 720Kb and 1.44Mb images work properly.

Just install what you want to run in an HDD and it will work fine.

Oh I must have missed that bit. That explains everything, thanks!

Issues with certain floppy images

Hi everyone! First things first, thank you for making this fantastic core. I'm having a lot of fun experimenting with what an original XT machine can do. I tried to look on this forum for the same topic without success. Certain floppy images (720K images to be exact) do not work well with the core: they give a general failure error when trying to a...
