What About the Analogue 3D?

Unread post by CTSS »

Hey guys!

I was wondering what you guys think about the Analogue 3D in general and its hardware (not out yet).

From https://www.analogue.co/3d

Analogue3D was developed to achieve unparalleled compatibility. Engineered directly into a 220k LE Altera Cyclone 10GX, the most powerful FPGA Analogue has ever used in a product. We spent 4 years developing a perfect way to experience N64 in FPGA for absolute accuracy. N64 is infamous for its difficulties within software emulation. 100% compatibility has never been achieved. Until now.

Did not order one, i am against preorders in general.

For my part, i don't need a dedicated N64 "emulator" but if there is a way to get more cores on it like the pocket.

It serves a different purpose than the MiSTer N64 core. I have no particular interest in it. I'm fine with my MiSTer triple-stack.

AFAIK, the Analogue 3D doesn't support OpenFPGA like the Analogue Pocket does. But there will likely be jailbreak cores similar to previous Analogue consoles.

Looks great… but to release a console on that large FPGA without OpenFPGA or some kind of developer tooling is a bit of a crime in my opinion. Still it makes me optimistic about the possibilities of a FOSS hardware (FOSH? lol) option in the future that could be a “MiSTer 2” candidate.

This.
I pre-ordered two units, but no OpenFPGA support is a shame. This and the fake sold out situation they created on purpose for the NT, SuperNT and MegaSG, while they still have truckload of AnalogueDUO nobody give a crapf*ck about.
I dont think I will purchase another analogueNT product ever again unless OpenFPGA is confirmed.

Is the FPGA in the 3D really twice the size of the one in the MiSTer used?

As far as i remember, the open FPGA support was added to the Pocket way later after release and is now part of the update all script. So is it not possible Analogue maybe will add it later to the 3D as well? If the FPGA is really twice the size, the possibilities are great. I looked it up and the dev kit alone is around 450 USD (guess + taxes + shipping). Could also be great for a MiSTer 2 but very expansive :(

The biggest problem is that every Analogue product is going to offer 'perfect' fidelity...until it's released and it doesn't. shrugs They have a long history of this.

Probably looked at other big corpo's marketing strategy and perfectly copied that to improve sales figures.

Still waiting for the MiSTer core to support Y/C. Would consider buying an Analouge 3D if it gains that feature.
