MiSTer Wallpapers
Users have been creating some excellent custom wallpapers specifically for MiSTer, designed to accommodate the OSD menu and fit with the whole “retro gaming/computing” concept. Let’s use this topic thread to share them.
To set up MiSTer to pick a different random wallpaper at startup, first remove any /media/fat/menu.png or /media/fat/menu.jpg. Then instead, create the folder /media/fat/wallpapers, and drop all your wallpapers (jpg or png) in there and reboot. If your MiSTer still isn’t showing any wallpaper after booting, attach a keyboard to it and press F1 to cycle through background modes until you see your wallpaper.
I’m attaching a few recently-created wallpapers to kick things off.

You can. Do it this way:OneEightZero wrote: ↑Mon May 25, 2020 5:11 pm I wish I could get these to display on my CRT monitor.
1. Cut/Crop the image to 4:3
2. Add this to the end of your INI:
Code: Select all
[Menu]
vga_scaler=1
video_mode=320,16,30,34,240,2,3,22,6400

Re: MiSTer Wallpapers
I really wish wallpapers played nicer if you deal with both 4:3 and 16:9 resolutions using alt settings. If I go from my 1080p 16:9 setting with a matching wallpaper and switch to my 1440p 4:3 setting, it squishes the wallpaper, and if I had 1440p 4:3 as my main with a wallpaper to match, my 1080p 16:9 setting stretches the wallpaper.
It'd be cool if you could have a menu image specific for each alt setting (people could even add some text to their custom wallpapers explaining what alt they're on if they wanted to), or maybe taking the menu image and cropping it to fit in the matching aspect ratio when scaled would be nice as well. I understand that 1440p isn't technically supported but I'm sure that there's other use cases that this could apply to.
As of right now I'm just using the MiSTer demoscene logo wallpaper edited to 1920x1440 for my 1440p config, and I'm just dealing with the stretching whenever I'm using 1080p.

Re: MiSTer Wallpapers
So this image is not made by me, or anything. But it's what I currently use as my MiSTer Wallpaper
It is my great regret that we live in an age that is proud of machines that think and suspicious of people who try to.
Re: MiSTer Wallpapers
I’ve got this in my bookmarks to download and put a few in a folder to get random wallpapers.

Re: MiSTer Wallpapers
Is there a way to make the wallpapers cycle from inside the core?
Kind of like F1 but for what's inside /wallpapers/?

Re: MiSTer Wallpapers
I remember this was discussed on Atari-Forum and there is no native feature like that, but I think somebody made a script for cron.

Re: MiSTer Wallpapers
This is what I'm currently using. I cropped it to a 14:9 aspect ratio so it doesn't look super distorted in either 4:3 or 16:9
...still looks better to me on a 4:3 CRT, but then again most things do

For the Megaman Battle Network and Megaman Star Force fans out there, this site has some really cool ones that coincidentally go really well with the setup I feel!
This is the one I'm using personally! ^w^

Just copy to SD path /media/fat/ with the name "back.jpg" (or png). Reboot and press F1.

Re: MiSTer Wallpapers
Normally, you must have a menu.png or menu.jpg at the root of the sd card and put all the other images in a "backgrounds" directory (also in the root of the sd). But, this feature recently stop working for me and i focus on playing the pcengine cd core instead of searching the cause of it

Re: MiSTer Wallpapers
Sorry about the noob question. But I've created the media/fat/wallpapers directory and I've put some of the excellent images posted above in there and I have deleted the menu.jpg that was in the root of my SD Card. I'm cycling through with F1 but I'm only seeing the "default" backgrounds. It seems so straight forward. What obvious thing am I missing?
