I've just discovered some monitor i've bought some time ago. It's positioned as monitor for RPi. Some aliexpress sellers sell it as bare panel with board, other sellers sell it in simple case shown bellow:
As you can see de10-nano can fit there, the case is pretty deep.
What i think can be done:
1) remove original speakers and replace them with smaller narrow to fit them on the side walls of case.
2) add 40mm fan to one of original speaker grid and de10-nano over it. Without heatsink - it should be fine.
3) use some horizontal SDRAM module.
4) use short HDMI cable. Can put it out and connect the HDMI input of monitor from outside. So later you may connect hdmi cable through extender to some other monitor temporary.
5) add some DC-DC converter from 12V to 5V, so the whole device will be powered from single 12V power source.
6) I think even additional RPi 3A+ can fit the case )for upcoming midi).
May be when i will get more free time, i will try it.
Monitor is good, 1920x1080. It supports vsync_adjust=2 and syncs to both 50Hz and 60Hz.Some RPi screen with case to fit MiSTer

Nice project! Some days ago I posted something similar with the iPad3 screen you mentioned some time ago. (With the video_mode=13 you added the screen is amazing)

The horizontal sdram module is mandatory for a project of this kind.
I’m using both heatsink and fan.
I’m currently improving the design, I’m thinking of using something like this for the power input connector

It would be great if Rpi zero would run the midi, but unfortunately it seems too underpowered.

it's single voltage. If you need both 12V abd 5V and want to power from a single voltage, then you need to add DC-DC 12V->5V. That Type-C connector with chip cannot do it.belgarcat wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 9:07 pm I’m thinking of using something like this for the power input connector

In PiCade i'm using mini AC power adapter providing both 12V and 5V. As it's home use device AC input is better
need at least 1.2GHz CPU. There a other non-RPi smaller boards, but to use that mt32pi must be migrated from baremetal to standard linux.
