Cable differences and problems with ocational screen rolling over YPbPr

Unread post by redsteakraw »

So I originally got a cheap vga to RCA adapter breakout and set everything up. Everything is fine but when things get bright or flash I get screen rolling this is apparent on the winning screens on KoF 98, or the fireworks demo for the NES or Pokemon yellow when you go between rooms. It is brief but noticeable but doesn't hinder gameplay, the fireworks is the worst case because everytime one explodes the screen rolls and this effects the OSD as well. Now I tried the Monoprice vga to component cables that are insulated and decently built but The colors look washed out and faded and again still rolls with the fireworks demo.

Is there anything I can do or buy that may prevent this? Would a rca resistor on the Green jack do the trick and which one would be recommended? Does anyone else have this problem?

To test this out on your setup if you have an NES everdrive pack go to 4 Homebrew > Demos & Intros > 2009 fireworks demo (PD).nes

I have the same issue, and I haven't been able to find a solution unfortunately. I was thinking it was either my cable or the fact I have a coupler on the component cable to extend it from the computer desk to the crt. I first noticed it on Super Mario World during the bowser fight when the background flashes from the lightning. I will check that fireworks demo you listed here as well.

Hopefully someone has a solution for this, I'm glad i'm not the only one, I haven't seen anyone else talk about this issue on discord/forums.

Is this only happening when the screen is very bright ?

I think it is when there is a quick flash of white so yes I think. The fireworks flash when they explode so it reliably triggers the screen to roll. Maybe it is moving from black to white quickly? I don't know. The KoF screen is white and I think there is a white wipe on pokemon when moving between rooms.

Growing up, one of my neighbors had a SNES hooked up to a monitor (via composite) that may have been a Commodore 1901 or similar unit (going by internet pictures / my memory). It would reliably roll picture on (I think) Butter Bridge 2, in SMW, one of the brightest levels in the game. May have been similar behavior?

I hope i'm not hijacking the original thread here, it looks like I'm having the same issue as the OP and hopefully we can work together to resolve it. For me i've only noticed it on a flash of white. I'm outputting to hdmi at the same time and the hdmi display is showing no indication of an issue at all.

Here is a video I found on youtube of the bowser battle i'm seeing it on, at around 1:30 you can see the flash from the lightning and the screen flash white, whenever this flash happens my screen does a roll and syncs back to normal right after. I played through the entire game without seeing another issue.
