OneLoad64 Games Collection v5 is here!

Unread post by StatMat »

I recently released the OneLoad64 Games Collection v1.0 for the C64. Initially not all of the games included were working on the MiSTer, but a recent core update has addressed this. Therefore I thought some of you guys might be interested in taking a look. :)

The games in this collection load super-quick without any intros and such, making their use feel a little more like using cartridge images. It currently includes 520 unique games.

It contains a set of single-load games in PRG format, each of which has been dumped from an original image using the machine-code monitor in a C64 emulator. There's one PRG in the main folder to be used with emulators and the MiSTer for the quickest loading times, as well as the BackBit and Ultimate II on real hardware! There's also crunched versions of the games for use on real-hardware in conjunction with devices such as the EasyFlash, SD2IEC, Tapecart etc. If you're interested in some of the specifics, the details for each game dump can be found in an XML file in the Dumps folder along with each dump file. In this way, the project also serves to document the dumping process for future reference.

Here's a video of some of the games in action using the VICE C64 emulator (sadly I can't afford a MiSTer just yet). Download link included in the description:

Special thanks go out to the following people for their contributions and support:

  • karokin and Pezz82 for helping me track down the issues with the quick-loading PRGs on the C64 MiSTer core

  • Per Håkan Sundell for his CCS64 emulator

  • The VICE Team for their C64 emulator

  • Magnus Lind for his excellent Exomizer crunching tool

  • The Gamebase64 Team for providing many of the original game images

  • The Lemon64 Team for their comprehensive database

And here's the current list which should at least cover some of everybody's favourites. If you have any other single-load titles you'd like to see added in the next release, then just let me know!

The burning question - are they NTSC/PAL compatible or (mostly) PAL-only?

That's a very good question. The majority of games are dumped from tape images, so were mostly intended for use on European PAL systems where tape usage was far more prevalent than in North America. There are a few NTSC titles included where either this was the best or only version available. Whilst some of the PAL games may run fine on NTSC systems (if a little fast), many may not work properly on an NTSC C64, whether emulated or not.

Apologies, I should have made that clearer in the OP.

I've been asked via PM what the what the download link is, but unfortunately as I'm a newbie, I can't reply to it! :p

Anyway, for clarity, the download link is available in the video description on YouTube.

Thanks for the collection Auf Wiedersehen Monty seems to have a cheat active as you can run through enemies and not die and Beach Head 2 is multi load and doesnt load the other levels.

No problem. Glad it's proving useful. :)

Interesting issue re AWM. It works fine in both CCS64 and VICE. I wonder if it's something specific to MiSTer? Sadly I don't have one yet, so I can't test myself. However, I do have a friend with one, so we'll investigate.

And sorry about BHII. I had tried to identify games that are not multi-load, which isn't always easy to identify, but clearly that one slipped through the checks. Again, I'll take a look and see if there's anything we can do there.

Amazing work, StatMat!

I had started my own, similar project (for personal use), but wasn't aware that there was already a similar one as far along as this, very cool. Yours also seem to be way more accurate and faster loading than mine.

Comparing my own collection with your file listing, it would be cool to see versions of the following, all are possible to do as PRGs:

Code: Select all

1943 - The Battle of Midway (1988)(Capcom)
Apple Cider Spider (1984)(Sierra Online)
Armalyte (1988)(Thalamus)
Badlands (1990)(Domark)
Blue Thunder (1984)(Richard Wilcox Software)
BMX Kidz (1987)(Firebird)
Bone Cruncher (1987)(Superior Software)
Bozos Night Out (1984)(Taskset)
Death Wish 3 (1987)(Gremlin Graphics)
DJ Puff's Volcantic Capers (1992)(Codemasters)
Fix-it Felix Jr
Ghosts 'n Goblins (1986)(Elite)
Ghouls 'n Ghosts (1989)(U.S. Gold)
Iron Horse (1987)(Konami)
Joust (1980)(Cursor Magazine)
Lady Tut (19xx)(Progame)
Marble Madness (1986)(Electronic Arts)
Mario Bros (1984)(Atari)
Mario Bros 2 (1987)(Thundersoft)
Mayhem in Monsterland (1993)(Apex)
Miami Vice (1989)(Ocean)
Music
Mutants (1987)(Ocean)
Myth - History in the Making (1990)(System 3)
Out Run (1988)(U.S. Gold)
Ping-Pong (1985)(S+S Soft)
Radar Rat Race (1982)(Commodore)
Seaside Special (1984)(Taskset)
Spy Hunter (1983)(U.S. Gold)
Turrican III - Intro (2000)(Smash Designs)
Up 'n Down (1984)(Sega)
View to a Kill, A (1985)(Domark)
War in Middle Earth (1989)(Melbourne House)
Wizard of Wor (1983)(Commodore)
Wonderboy (1987)(Activision)
Zaxxon (1984)(Synapse Software)
Of the ones that are probably not possible to do as PRGs, are:

Code: Select all

Bionic Commando
Bomb Jack (Beer Edition)
Defender of the Crown
Goonies
Impossible Mission 2
Karateka
Katakis
Mario Bros (Arcade)
Platoon
Portal
Rainbow Islands
Rock Star Ate My Hamster
Salamander
Solar Jetman
Summer Games II
Summer Games
Turrican 2
Turrican 3 Preview
Turrican
Tusker
Winter Games.G64
Wizard of Wor (Arcade)
Wonderboy in Monsterland
World Games
...but it would be cool to see these as cartridge files instead as a better alternative to D64/T64 if that's something that is doable.

Finally, there are some games that are available as cartridge files that may or may be possible to do as PRGs:

Code: Select all

Airborne Ranger (1987)(Microprose)
Bugs Bunny (www.gamesthatwerent.com/gtw64)
Commando Arcade (2015)
Congo Bongo (1983)(Sega)
Daffy Duck (/www.gamesthatwerent.com/gtw64)
Joust (/www.gamesthatwerent.com/gtw64)
Pang (1991)(Ocean)
Skate or Die! (1987)(Electronic Arts)
Wizard of Wor Max (1983)(Commodore)(JP)
Zak McKracken & Maniac Mansion (198x)(LucasArts)
With the de-duplication and elimination of multiple identical versions, consistent package format and no crack intros, this is kind of turning into the "MegaAGS" (Amiga) equivalent for C64, which is fantastic!

Keep up the good work!

No problem. Many thanks for your comprehensive feedback. :)

What technique did you use for your collection? I am planning to release a video soon documenting the approach I use for dumping the games, as I suspect others may be interested and might be able to contribute to the project.

And indeed, sadly quite a number of those wouldn't be possible with the current technique due to being multi-load games. My all-time favourite game on the C64 is The Last Ninja (as is probably apparent from my avatar! :p), but of course that's another ML game. But hey, we may be able to come up with something to support them in the future. As for games which already exist as cartridges, I have generally left them out for now given there are already quick-starting copies available. There has been some discussion about including the .CRTs in a future release though,so that OL64 becomes a one-stop solution for no fuss games playing, so we'll see.

And yeah, MegaAGS is an awesome collection, although I think it would have been better to use my version of AGS2 along with the improved screenshots and skin, as the one in MAGS looks a bit basic and the screenshots are pretty poor quality. My version can be seen here running on a GPD-XD Android handheld device [here]. To be fair, they may not have known it existed, as it only really ever popped up at the EAB forums. I should probably do a more mainstream release sometime. Although it seems Pezz82 was half-way [there] in his MiSTer Amiga setup video. WHDLoad is definitely the best way to enjoy Amiga games, even on real hardware, which of course was really it's intended purpose. It's a really nice side-effect that it's useful for emulation too. So much better than swapping disk images. ;)

Anyway, I don't think OL64 is quite as awesome just yet, but I do plan to keep working on it for a long time to come, as there's still so much goodness yet to include from the C64 library. ;)

Nothing special, just leaning on the work that others have done to make PRG files in the past. You are definitely doing a better job.

There’s a great cartridge version out there that includes both Last Ninja 1 and Last Ninja 2 on the same cart, with all the level loading screens etc. There’s also one for Last Ninja 3 done in the same way.

Yes, I think this is the way to go. PRGs for anything that isn’t multi-load, cartridges for ones that are.

I am helping improve the launcher screenshots and layout for it specifically for MiSTer/Minimig, but it’s on hold until I’m back to my computer setup — traveling at the moment.

Great, I’ll help in any way I can — although my Amiga knowledge vastly surpasses my C64 knowledge, I was too young at the time it came out to really learn its inner workings. Did play a bunch of games on it, of course. 😄

I see. Well it sounds like OL64 can help add to your existing collection. :)

And yeah, custom CRTs for multi-load games are a very cool way to solve the issue. Interestingly, over the past couple of days I have been working on a new approach which allows me to convert the uncrunched PRGs to Magic Desk format CRTs for even quicker loading (around 1 second instead of 4.5 for the existing PRGs, which is all relative of course I know (but hey about an 80% improvement isn't too shabby! ;) ). But as an added benefit, I have also added support to display the loading screen before a game starts. This was something I really wanted to include for all games which have one, as I think it makes it a more complete preservation. But of course, these could only be shown before with the existing PRGs from v1 if they were still present in memory after the game had finished loading, which in many cases they weren't. However, with the extra storage the Magic Desk cartridge format provides, it's straightforward to add a couple more banks to store the bitmap data. This will become the default uncrunched format in v2 of the collection. I'm even considering adding support to include the loading music too if present.

A couple of examples being used with VICE can be seen in this quick video (the description contains a download link for the files):

These haven't been tested with the MiSTer yet, but it does have Magic Desk cartridge support, so hopefully they should be fine. Be interesting to see if they do. :)

And with regards to the launcher screenshots for Minimig, I may be able to help out there. Essentially I previously wrote a script to download and convert all the screenshots from the OpenRetro Game Database (https://openretro.org) to the half-height IFF images required for AGS2 (there were well over 3000 available the last time I checked). I'll see if I can dig it out and share with you for the project. The skin I created for AGS2 can be downloaded here if you fancy a look (including the original PSD file):

Feel free to use it as a basis if you like. It'd be dead simple to change the logos in the bottom left-hand corner. And thanks for the offer of assistance. It's fantastic when the community come together to work on retro related projects. :)

I have been doing something a bit similar but for multi-disk games. That is, I have not really done any of the work, I have just been collecting the games when I came across them, but there is a nice collection of C64 games that got made into CRT format. F.ex. many of the AD&D SSI gold ox games.

I came across a forum that I spent a few days going over downloading all the CRTs I could find. Often they still need a D64 to save games to, but all the rest is loaded from the catridge.

Thanks guys. v2 is coming along nicely and I hope to release over the next couple of weeks. The new CRT format can be seen in this video for all the Dizzy games. Where there wasn't a loading screen for the C64 version, I have used images converted from the Spectrum:

Cool stuff! Whilst OL64 is focused on the single load games, it would of course be great to have reworked multi loaders too, so there's certainly some scope to look at this too at some point. Please do share what you have collected. :)

Great collection! The PRG files load fast and start immediately. I only wish that the C64 core would do an auto reset before loading PRGs. I also would like a way to map the joystick swap option to a button.

I am still experimenting with all the CRTs I have collected. To figure out what works and what does not, to see if there might be issues with them and CRT support on my Ultimate 64 has some issues now and then. I should probably try to see if maybe the MiSTer is easier to use these CRT files with.

The U64 has a lot of settings and I am not sure what might be causing this, or if maybe its because I am using a very new and not fully tested firmware.

But often these games comes without any crack intros and such, which is very nice. There are also tools that makes it possible to put a lot of PRG on one EasyFlash cartridge. But it wont really make much difference when PRGs are usually instant loaded as they get injected into the RAM I think.

I do have a link to the forum I found a lot of these on and many are on CSDB as well, although there many seem to have some intro stuff and I do prefer to avoid those.
https://www.forum64.de/index.php?thread ... &pageNo=58

The page linked is the now latest page in the forum, it seems to be quite active. I was checking up on it again after I read this post and began looking at the collection of CRTs I got. They now have a working CRT of Grand Monster Slam, which I had been hoping to find there, and it seems to be fully working, so that is nice. Also no intros or anything besides the original load screens. Every few pages someone is updating a list of all the games that have been made CRT versions of.

Much of it is in German, and you do need to make a user to be able to download the linked files. I will try to test my CRTs a bit more to make sure which ones are working best so its only the best versions of them I share. I will probably try them out in Vice to speed up the testing.

I have been trying out my CRT collection. Many of them do have some crack intros and such, and the SSI AD&D games I cannot seem to get to run now. Even if I try to use WinVice. Not sure why that is because I have had them running before, but now at least Champions of Krynn just gets to the point where it should start playing music and showing the title, but seems to freeze as it shows the title.

I have included som "xbank" CRTs. They will not work on their own, but are a type of EasyFlash that is ready to become part of an EasyFlash collection cartridge. I have a lot of G64 files with original versions of many of these games, and newer versions of the games as well in case of the SSI AD&D games. That is one way to ensure you do not get any crack intro, but only if I could find a way to make them into a CRT and I do not think I will.

I will try to dig through this collection in the future. I have included some collections as well, that are a bit better managed. I do have a lot more CRT files, but then it would be Action Replay and stuff like that. This is just games, but I think it might be all the CRTs I have... or at least close to them all, I have. The ones I am somewhat sure should be playable.

The C64 core on MiSTer does not do that? That is nice to have, the Ultimate 64 gives the option to "run" a file where it will inject the PRG into the RAM directly so the loading is instant. You can also go into D64 and T64 files and run individual PRGs on them. CRTs also have the same option, where it wont fully flash the CRT, so a reset will remove it from memory again.

I have not yet tried the C64 core on MiSTer because I have the Ultimate 64, which has come really far. So far it is becoming difficult to find more features that could be added to it. One missing could be supporting a USB mouse as the Commodore 1351 mouse, and otherwise it would be pretty advanced stuff like fully supporting the SuperCPUv2 or supporting the C128. It already supports D64, T64, TAP, G64, PRG, CRT, bin versions of cartridges, D71, D81, DNP, REU RAM, has a RAM disk, ways of using speedloading roms and... well lots of stuff I did not even know the C64 even could do. So its rather recommendable I think. Oh yeah, and it can be set to run at up to 48mhz now.

Nice. I gave this a vote. It is likely months before it will be done though. I am pretty sure it will be Sorg doing it and he seems to focus on a few specific systems at a time. So he needs to get by the C64 core in his rotation.

Indeed, I mentioned this would be good when submitting my PRG loading tweak. I may take a look once v2 of the collection is out. But interestingly, I guess the new OL64 Magic Desk CRTs will be fine anyway. ;)

Maybe you can give the Dizzy examples a try I posted on my recent update video above? They're available here: [here]

I gave them a pretty quick test each. On my Ultimate 64 it all ran great, except Bubble Dizzy, for some reason it had some issues. Pretty sure its related to the overall CRT issues I am having on it. Must either be a setting somewhere or its some of the most recent firmwares that introduced this.

When I tried them in WinVice 64 they all ran great. I have not tried them on the MiSTer yet. Now that I have used my Ultimate 64 quite a bit and its newest features I do feel some more like comparing the two.

Oh and these games are pretty great. I have always read about there being a lot of Dizzy games, some of the titles of the games, but never actually played any of them. I am surprised to find how many of them are actually different types of games. I always thought they were somewhat simple platformers, but generally they have some adventure / puzzle elements as well. I think it was the Prince of Yolkfolk game where you even have to put some leaves at a door, set fire to them and then put out the door being on fire with some water. Ahh, that is some good adventure puzzling right there :) I should probably have actually read the articles and reviews of these games in my old magazines. I just had a lot of wrong assumptions about them and ignored them.

Nice. Many thanks for testing. It will be interesting to see how they work on MiSTer too. I suspect they should be fine.

And yeah, whilst just a tad cheesy, the Dizzy series has quite a few good installments. :)
