EIZO EV2460-BK 24" 60Hz display enough?
EIZO EV2460-BK 24" 60Hz display enough?
Hello,
I am looking for a display for my MiSTer up to 300€. As I know EIZO from my job as a designer I know EIZO very well and appreciate its quality since 12 years.
I compared the budget monitor EV2460-BK to other recommended displays from Acer, LG, etc. They may have more Hz but do I need more than 60Hz in this case? Most old school devices dont offer more than 60Hz, or do I need some buffer here? The display is recommended for Office and Gaming. But I never would use this here for newer consoles from PS2 and up.
SPECS
-1920 x 1080 (Full HD), 60Hz
- IPS Panel
- 16,7 Mio. Colours (Display Port, 8 Bit), 16,7 Mio. Farben (HDMI, 8 Bit), 16,7 Mio. Farben (DVI, 8 Bit), 16,7 Mio. Farben (Dsub, 8 Bit)
- Max Brightness: 250
- Kontrast: 1000:1
- Reaction Time 5ms
- HDMI, DVI-D, DisplayPort

I'd recommend a monitor that supports G-Sync or FreeSync, as they give you more flexibility with the VSync settings.

Thank you. Is that important for a correct ratio like 4:3? Never heard of that before.

Re: EIZO EV2460-BK 24" 60Hz display enough?
No—it's about refresh rate. To cut a long story short, monitors with G-Sync and FreeSync monitors can change their refresh rates on the fly, which means they also support all sorts of oddball refresh rates. That makes it possible to run MiSTer cores close to (if not at) their original refresh rates, rather than forcing them to a true 60 Hz signal (which can introduce lag or alter the timing of the game slightly).
Re: EIZO EV2460-BK 24" 60Hz display enough?
Thank you, but G-Sync (Nvidia) or FreeSync (AMD) only works with the monitor, when the graphic card supports this technology. Mister doesnt have either of them and this display Is ONLY for the mister, nothing else will ever be connected to this display. I tested the Mister with my Eizo CS2740 4K monitor at 60Hz and it works fine. So it should work with a budget 60Hz display, too.
Re: EIZO EV2460-BK 24" 60Hz display enough?
I think the reports have been that the Freesync monitors actually sync at the lower framerates, unlike normal 60Hz monitors. It's not that the MiSTer would need variable refresh rate, but a monitor that allows e.g. 57.4Hz that CAVE used.
Re: EIZO EV2460-BK 24" 60Hz display enough?
Thanks, I dont use Cave so it should work with a normal 60Hz monitor. I only use NES, SNES, GAMEBOY, MEGA CD, SMS, GENESIS, C64, MINIMIG

What I have read about freesync capable screens working with unusual refresh rates:

Re: EIZO EV2460-BK 24" 60Hz display enough?
I have a 4K freesync monitor with DP/HDMI that does not adjust its refresh from 60 to match vsync=2, and a much older 1200p DVI/VGA monitor that syncs perfectly. Just because it has freesync doesn't mean it will necessarily work, and conversely you don't necessarily need freesync for it to work either. Which makes buying stuff a crapshoot. I'd also say gsync-only (no freesync) monitors are especially suspect, since they likely need NVDIA's special handshake to even do anything.
By "work" here I mean actually matches refresh to eliminate jitter. I don't get tearing on my 4k running a 50hz game but that is because the scaler is buffering. I do get uneven scrolling as is very obvious on Minimig Turrican. Wheras its silky smooth on the old 1200p and with less input lag to boot. Meanwhile a PC running Retroarch with its adaptive sync setting does make Turrican look flawless on the 4K, but the Mister does not, suggesting that not all adaptive refresh signals are made equal and monitors may treat them differently.
If you're buying specifically for Mister, you might get a better value picking up a bunch of older LCDs for cheap/free and see which works. Particularly ones that have a VGA input alongside DVI, and are therefore tuned for a time when 60 hz was not the norm. We don't actually need a monitor that can change its refresh from frame to frame, just one that displays a wide range of stable refreshes directly and accurately.
70 hz+ is also nice if you want to use DOS/ao486, which again is easier to find with VGA era monitors. CRT VGA also play very well with Mister's analog output using linedoubler, zero lag and no scaling artifacts, another avenue to consider if you are looking at old monitors anyway.

Thank you all for your input, I think I go for this EIZO and try it. For the consoles I use It should to the job. I have no intention to use a DOS system.

Re: EIZO EV2460-BK 24" 60Hz display enough?
I'd definitely consider 1440p instead of 1080p for a monitor, precisely because of integer scaling for 480p/480i/240p/160p/144p games fitting evenly. This will reduce the possibility of shimmering in most console games.
Keep in mind 1440p is not completely officially supported, you often have to mess with video modes manually to make it work.
