Of course Laxer3A is legit. He's had sources for several fpga ps1 pieces available on github https://github.com/Laxer3a for a long time. And once he started working with a couple other people, like ultraembedded https://github.com/ultraembedded we saw those people posting videos from their own fpga dev boards that showed laxer's gpu outputting frames made from emulator gpu command dumps.
The only question is why is Gradius2 spouting obvious nonsense? It's really easy to verify that Laxer3A and ultraembedded are real devs doing real work.

The progress of this project is so inspiring. (which was why I was so shocked when someone suggested this was fake)
I never had a PS1 but I have always been interested the variety that the PS1 offers. I have emulated a few games and played some on my vita so I am very excited to have a more accurate version of this console.
Is there a 2.4ghz version of the ps controller ( any generation) that one would recommend? ( I apologize if this is a little off topic)

I have no idea but as long the project doesnt become too stressful for them and they have fun making a great core (that many of us will enjoy). Im certainly enjoying the process at the moment and seeing the progress they are making. What once was thought to be impossible, now is looking more possible. That is pretty awesome.

It might still be impossible to run full speed 100% accuracy on the Mister as it is now. The fact they are using ddr3 is concerning, I don't know how they gonna get around the latency on the Mister. The board they are using currently has better ram latency yet it's still causing problems... And they can't use the SRAM because they reserve it for the audio. So while it's now certain, it will come to the Mister, it might not be full speed, or if it is they might have to get really creative and take some shortcuts on the rendering. Anyway, all of this is super exciting! No way in hell. You should get an SDRAM upgrade, it's pretty cheap currently.
On a second thought, since they plan to run the audio on the SDRAM maybe they won't use it for anything else and MAYBE it could run on 32mb, but I have my doubt. ^^

The dev board they are using only has 256MB of DDR3 ram with a 16-bit bus. The DE-10 Nano has 1GB of DDR3 with a 32 bit bus.

I didn't know it had less DDR3 ram. Do you think it will change th way they implement the audio on the Mister? The specs for the Cyclone V family say it supports up to 12 MB of memory in 10K blocks. Not sure how much of that the MiSTer framework uses, if anything, but hopefully there will be enough free to fit the ~3 MB that a PSX needs, right? Or am I talking nonsense?

That's hardcoded per chip version; the Cyclone V on the DE10 has 5570 kilobits (=696 kiloybtes).
In general, we have 3 memory banks available on the DE10: this embedded RAM, 32/128MB of SDRAM, and 512MB of DDR3 (half is reserved for the ARM side). For thing like CDs one can use the SD card (or external HDD) as storage.
Core authors make their cores fit the above memory model... Access speed of each memory type is critical to work out what is needed, but it's possible to come up with some tricks to pretend you have more memory banks of the same type. As long as the overall memory setup allows the core to fit timings, then it will be fine.

NeoGeo is more of a console core btw. Arcade cores use MRA's and load a rom individually by MRA, that's one of their major distinctions. The NeoGeo core just has the capability of running arcade games because the MVS and AES were extremely similar in terms of hardware.
