Amiga AGA Demos

Unread post by shertz »

I've noticed a lot of the Amiga AGA demos playback very choppy. The video is not smooth. I have all the RAM at the highest setting and the processor is set at 69020 AGA.

Demos like DarksideAGA and CapturedDreamsAGA are choppy.

Do I have to change something in my settings?

Yes. And I've tried 60hz. Same thing.

No need to change settings, these are ‘late’ AGA demos by the black lotus and from memory they will run on a 68020 but needed a faster cpu to be at their best.

A lot of late AGA stuff, particularly by Black Lotus isn't going to run smoothly until you get into 68060 territory and even then they're not all going to be as smooth as you might expect.

To be fair I remember having the same experience with a bunch of pc demos in the mid 90s if you had less than top end pc hardware too.

Min requirement may have been 486-33 but a lot of demos ran pretty choppy on that. Same in amiga land.

Also it was a different time. Some of the techniques used were impressive to be seen moving in real time AT ALL on the hardware it ran on.

It wasn’t like 60fps smooth rendering was to be expected for all this even on high end hardware of the day. It was simply the ability to render it in real time at any sort of frame rate.

This thread is a bit hard to read but there are some examples of problematic demos: https://www.amigafrance.com/forums/topi ... k/page/43/

Yes but my recent new version was more clear ( old thread was closed ). :D

Note : all demos are tested with Mister, real hardware and WinUae in same conditions.

Note 2 : subpixel mode seems not to be implemented in Amiga core.

I'm just watching DarkSideAGA now and it's about as good as I would expect really.

I can't do a direct comparison to 68060 as my 060 machine is in storage and even if it was here it's not AGA but since getting the mister I've really not missed the 060 much aside from perhaps the FPU. I have found that a lot of the time a fast 68020 is infinitely more compatible than a 100Mhz 060. SYSINFO reports the minimig core as being 99 or 100Mhz. I don't know if that's reliable and correct or not but if it is then 68020@100Mhz is a pretty good system.

I have an A1200 with 030@50 and 060@75 if you want to give me a specific demo to test them against I will and report back.

Try the two mentioned in the 1st post "DarksideAGA and CapturedDreamsAGA"

While I suspect they will be better on an 060 system it wouldn't overly surprise me if they are still not 30 or 60fps smooth. I think the main take away is that the fact they drop down to choppy frame rates in places on a 99Mhz 020 is pretty much as expected.

And apologies, I realise I necro'd a bit of an old thread but I was doing some catch up. Personal events have given me quite a bit of mister time this week.

Hi,

I tried both demos on a 060 @75mhz.
They both ran smooth.
Darkside seems more an 030 demo, Captured Dreams is more inline with 060 demos with the effects/resolution, so I would expect that to be choppy on a 030 at 50Mhz. I might get around to test if I swap out my A1200 060 currently setup.
