Acorn Archimedes Core

Unread post by retrofan01 »

Been enjoying this core as an A3010 owner in the mid-90s! Any chance .hdf support could be added? I'd love to be able to use the hard disk image from my original system.

This was an image made from my hard disk on my old A3010 containing my personal files, games, apps etc. I did find this other hard disk image that someone compiled on Atari-Forum though:

Seconded! I'd love to have HDF support in the Archimedes (an A3020 user in the 90's)

Has anyone had any luck getting the Archie core to work on a 15khz CRT?

Nice thanks for the link. We used A3010 when I was at high school in the tech and history departments. Looking forward to messing around with it again

I switched to using a PC CRT via the a HDMI to VGA dongle. The video output is much better but there is a slight shimmer on the video signal which is notably worse when "Refresh Rate=variable" is set in the menu.

Is anybody experiencing this and are there any recommended video settings?

From memory the Archimedes didn't really output at 15Khz. At least not as a general rule. I think it was somewhere between 24 and 31Khz.

The Archimedes had a mode for 15 KHz monitors.

Try tapping the "0" key on the Numpad while booting to set the Archimedes to the 15 KHz mode.

Oh, thank you for the tip.
I tried it: it switches for a few seconds to 15khz at 50hz refresh rate, then seems to switch back to 31khz sadly.

The switch should switch permanent, seems like a bug in the core, open an issue on Github. I used this method on the MiST version of the core all the time with my 15 KHz monitor (until a function to save the CMOS was added on MiST, that allowed me to save the setting).

That’s great to know. Hopefully it will be fixed. I noticed in recent builds I can get a 15khz image buts it’s elongated.

If you want to run VGA into an arcade monitor then have a look a the Ultimarc JPAC it has a clock dividing circuit.

Please note I have not tried this with MiSTer....yet but I think others may have.

Does anyone know which riscos roms are supported by this core?
Also, does anyone know when FPU and HDD support will arrive?

Loving the core so far!

Thanks for the addition of HDD support Sorgelig and everyone else involved!

I'm trying to access my existing .hdf image which works fine in RISC OS 3.11 on Arculator when mounted as ADFS (pressing F12 then entering command *configure IDEDiscs 1) or IDEFS (entering *configure IDEFSDiscs 1 as per the core documentation) but attempting to access the image in RISC OS on the updated Archie core gives a 'disc not understood' error. Is this an issue with the core or does my .hdf image have to be altered in some way?

EDIT: extracted the .hdf from the Archie.7z file below, used Arculator to copy the files on my image to the Archie .hdf. Successfully mounted the Archie image in MiSTer.

Thanks for the new version, works with the HDF from the third post in this thread just like a charm!
I still own my A3000 from my youth and I do have all my data already on my Raspi with RiscOS.
Can anybody give me some hints how to get all that transfered to the HDF? Got Arculator and RiscPCEmu on my W10 machine but both refuse to mount this HDF.

Cheers and have a great weekend :-)

I tried the image that hubersn made over at the Atari Forum and it works fine with the method described on Github. The only thing that I don't understand is how I can make it permanent that the !Boot folder is launched when I start the core. The only way I managed it to get work is by middle-button-clicking on the Acorn logo, choose Exit and then type

*idefs
*drive 4
*!Boot.!Run

The !Boot folder on this image has the Uniboot installed that is needed to run Starfighter 3000.

Just to confirm: The above linked Archie.7z hard disk image works great.

This core is so much improved by having HD support. Going to now get my HD image off my actual A3000 ZIDEFS card and transfer the files over to Archie via Arculator. The A3000 can then be packed away or possibly sold.

A great for MiSTer, with the PCW8256 coming as well. Congrats to all the developers.

After a bit of head scratching (and swearing) I managed to get the core working with an HD image, and to install and configure Uniboot, so thanks very much for the great work.

I've been testing a few games, and most of them work fine. One exception is Twinworld, which has corrupted graphics. Also, any attempt to use ADFFS results in an unrecoverable garbled screen.

Thanks again!

Thanks for those command prompt hints!
Is there a different way to change the harddrive names than clicking with the middle mouse button on it's icon?
The drives name in the icon bar doesn't change. But when I open the drive it shows the given name in the top of the window i.e. "IDEFS::SIDKIDD.$ (n)"
