SVGA resolution Gauntlet

Unread post by d18c7db »

Hi

It took me a while to record some Youtube gameplay but I finally did it. This is a hardware modified Atari Gauntlet that displays the entire playfield at once, sort of a novel and fresh approach to playing the game. Runs unmodified original ROMs, so no change to game logic. Video is output simultaneously on both HDMI and VGA ports at 32KHz.

Writeup and a downloadable MiSTer .rbf here. There is no support for this, it's just a little experiment for the novelty factor.

Cheers
Alex

Many thanks, it completely kills the appeal of the game for me but still looks interesting.

The levels feel much bigger than the actually are. I was surprised to see their actual size. :)

That's an interesting piece of work. Top stuff.

Thanks for this, need to test it later. (Regular) Gauntlet is one of my favorite cores and somehow it feels much better on Mister than any other port / emulator I have played. My HDMI plasma TV shows some noise pixels in level change screen on Gauntlet II but I guess it is my display and it doesn't affect the gameplay which is perfect.

The sparkles you see during level changes is how you know you're playing on realistic hardware instead of software emulation. It's a side effect of how the hardware accesses the memory and it's visible on the real arcades too.

Amazing! Still plays really well, and it's cool seeing the whole maze. Interesting way to play Gauntlet!

Ahh system1 work in progress. Moved to a new apartment in Feb and spent last two months doing renovations. Getting back to system1 now :)
indiana Jones boots and plays through the attract mode, but the colors are wrong and no control buttons are hooked up, so not really playable yet.

Very cool! I loaded this up and it completely changes the feel of the game. Is this only compatible with Gauntlet 1, or will Gauntlet II work with it as well?
