Attempting a kill screen in Crazy Kong cos Donkey Kong is too hard
I'm sick of keep dying on level 6 in Donkey Kong so I've sacked it for a while and I'm attempting a kill screen in the much easier Crazy Kong. Progress so far is 396,800 and level 14. I think kill screen is at level 22. According to Twin Galaxies this score would be 7th in the world.

I tried the same thing for a while on the BitKit, but switched back to regular DK because I liked to “smoothness” and challenge of the game better. Good luck!

Re: Attempting a kill screen in Crazy Kong cos Donkey Kong is too hard
Anyone else have this problem? Last night I was checking out the alternative Crazy Kong cores and all I am getting is a black screen. I ran the updater and still got the same problem. So I deleted the mra files and the roms and ran the updater again. It didn't even notice that anything was missing. I downloaded the mra's manually and the mame rom and put them all in the correct place but still get a black screen.

Re: Attempting a kill screen in Crazy Kong cos Donkey Kong is too hard
I just tried the alternate mra files and didn't encounter any problems. Could you provide the log files for troubleshooting? In order to get the log files, you need to connect to your MiSTer via PuTTY and then load the mra files that had problems.Aspie wrote: ↑Sat May 22, 2021 1:56 pm Anyone else have this problem? Sorry I don't have a clue on how to use PuTTY. Where are the log files stored?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Fresh resync of updater, cleared out arcade and mame files, ran updater script, rebooted, then ran mame-getter and hbmame-getter and I'm getting the same result.pcfreak324 wrote: ↑Sat May 22, 2021 4:01 pmI just tried the alternate mra files and didn't encounter any problems. It might be related to the new Main that was just released, did you update yet?
EDIT: Just rolled back main 3 times in a row (3 versions back) and that didn't resolve it. Hrm.. not sure, but multiple people getting black screen, something is weird.

Re: Attempting a kill screen in Crazy Kong cos Donkey Kong is too hard
The log files are created by PuTTY from the console output of your MiSTer. They are stored on the hard disk of the computer that was used to connect to MiSTer.
You can get instructions on how to use PuTTY on the MiSTer Wiki: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Main_Mi ... connection

The screen is black but I think the core is loaded because when I press the menu button to open the main menu it does play a game soundaberu wrote: ↑Sat May 22, 2021 4:55 pmFresh resync of updater, cleared out arcade and mame files, ran updater script, rebooted, then ran mame-getter and hbmame-getter and I'm getting the same result.pcfreak324 wrote: ↑Sat May 22, 2021 4:01 pmI just tried the alternate mra files and didn't encounter any problems. I've download Putty, connected the MiSTer to my laptop, and then that's me stumped

I don't remember what the clear screen is but in the second screen capture the player is ready for a jump of death !Aspie wrote: ↑Wed May 19, 2021 4:05 pm I'm sick of keep dying on level 6 in Donkey Kong so I've sacked it for a while and I'm attempting a kill screen in the much easier Crazy Kong. Looks like you're almost there. You need to turn on logging in PuTTY's settings:

Did you try opening the file with Microsoft Editor/Notepad? You could also try renaming the file to *.txt if it helps.

Re: Attempting a kill screen in Crazy Kong cos Donkey Kong is too hard
I turned off the MiSTer. Connected my laptop to it. Turned on MiSTer. Opened Putty. Selected logging. Chose a name and location for the file. I started the Crazy Kong core that is giving a black screen. Clicked open on Putty. There was no file created.

Re: Attempting a kill screen in Crazy Kong cos Donkey Kong is too hard
First you need to start your MiSTer. Then you connect with PuTTY. You will see a black console window where you are asked for your MiSTer username and password (usually "root" and "1" if you didn't change it). After that you can start the Crazy Kong core. Everything that is shown in the console window will be written to the log file.
I have attached a screenshot of PuTTY showing the console output from MiSTer after loading a Crazy Kong alternate mra.

Well this is strange. Do you get an output if you press some random buttons on your controller?

Re: Attempting a kill screen in Crazy Kong cos Donkey Kong is too hard
Do you get the message "Welcome to MiSTer (www.MiSTerFPGA.org)" before being asked for username and password?
After the login, does it list the contents of your SD card when you type "cd /media/fat; ls" at the command prompt?

Re: Attempting a kill screen in Crazy Kong cos Donkey Kong is too hard
Ok thank you for trying. I have no idea what could be the issue. I always used the COM port and never tried to connect via network. Maybe other users can help you. Without the debugging information from MiSTer's console, it is difficult to find out what is wrong with the alternate mra files for Crazy Kong. One last guess is that you have incompatible rom sets.

It is weird because I know they used to work before. It's been a while since I tried them. I will try some new roms next.
Thanks for all you help.

Re: Attempting a kill screen in Crazy Kong cos Donkey Kong is too hard
If you check the MRA's they are referring to, some are from the HBMAME set too, and given that all of the alts do the exact same thing, then it's likely something wrong with the most recent version of the core, main, and linux.pcfreak324 wrote: ↑Sun May 23, 2021 5:16 pm Ok thank you for trying. Also you should probably remove that link, it's direct linking to piracy which is a bit of a no no in retro gaming forums.

Re: Attempting a kill screen in Crazy Kong cos Donkey Kong is too hard
Using Mame 229 roms makes no difference. I've noticed that the alternative Burger Time (Data East Set 2) isn't working, just shows a white screen.

Re: Attempting a kill screen in Crazy Kong cos Donkey Kong is too hard
For burger time data east set 2, try this MRA. The current alt MRA has a flaw in it. There is an update coming, but here's a sorta sneak peak (not done) for ya that should work. Save the following into a file named "Burger Time (Data East Set 2).mra" and replace the old one with it.

Re: Attempting a kill screen in Crazy Kong cos Donkey Kong is too hard
Ok thanks Aberu, I will try this later. I tried the alternative Crazy Kongs on another MiSter, a brand new one, only just built and never been played, and it had the same problems.
