No - the core uses a Yamaha sound chip which is already supported by Jotego. Midi is optional in some games similar to PC / Amiga.

Is there a way to convert 2HD to any of the supported formats? I'd love to play Cho Ren Sha on this, but I can only find it in 2HD. Or better yet, is 2HD support coming for this?

While I can't address your exact question, there are other dumps available. You can check out the TOSEC romset or one of the MAME romsets (chorensa.zip). Those dumps are in .dim format.

My MiSTer hasn't arrived, so I cannot check on it, but i have Cho Ren Sha in HDF format. Would this be useful to you?

You should also be aware that in the current state of this core, Cho Ren Sha doesn't run at the proper framerate

Sorry, My product use only D88 format for FDD images. (not only X68k but also PC-88,PC-98,TOWNS...)
To convert another format to D88 use vfic is useful.

Hey! I've been thinking about trying out the X68000 core, but I need some help:

1. Is this a good time to try this out if you don't know much about the X68000, or should I wait for an updated core?
2. Where do I get the newest/best core? Is there one that's better than the official distribution?
3. How do I run a game on it? Is there a good guide for how to run games? Should we make one?

1. Yes since 80% of games run and they all run better than any software emu.

2. http://fpga8801.seesaa.net/ is the official webpage. All functional changes like game compatibility updates will come from there. The "official" core is just the base core with scaler attached to it at the moment - which is handy but yeah no additional improvements.

3. Source d88 floppy disc images or convert HDF to d88.

Anyone manage to get the English fan translation of Star Cruiser working on this? Tempted to install the core and get everything set up, but this is the only game I'm interested in playing right now.

I managed to get started. Since it could be useful for other newcomers, I'll post how I got a few games to run:
  • I used the 2020-09-13 version of the core (linked from this forum thread):
    x68000_20200913.rar
  • I installed the RBF in /media/fat/_Computer, and moved x68000.rom to /media/fat/games/X68000/boot.rom
  • I put a disk image 'Tonton *.hdf' in the HDF and reset the X68000. I could now load a bunch of games from a menu.
  • I tested 16 games, 12 of them worked great, two of them didn't boot, and two of them had graphical glitches.
The display wasn't scaled to fullscreen like most other cores, but I managed to zoom my TV to compensate.

I will post a recording in this forum thread after I have tested some more games.

Please let me know if I'm doing something stupid. :D

I think the core from this post is more recent:

Can you point me in a direction how you found the tonton hdf files?

I tried the MIDI core, but music didn't seem to work out of the box, so I switched to the other one. Maybe I just need to configure it correctly, but it's a bit confusing for someone new to the X68000.

I'm sorry, I downloaded those HDFs a while ago, and can't remember where I got them. Maybe here?

I found another HDF set, don't know if it's better or worse:

This one unfortunately is an HDS image and so far SCSI is not supported by the core.

I only tried MIDI with an USB adapter and a Roland Sound Canvas, here you have to set MIDI to USB in the core. The remaining sound worked for me. There is also a version of the core with Jotegos sound chip simulations, it sounds quite different:

Would you please share the ini file to use this core on TV (crt 15khz, i guess) ?

Is there any source to those tonton hdf files?

Many thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, this core cannot be switched to screen modes other than SVGA 800x600. It will be enlarged and displayed in this screen mode.
That's because the original of this core was developed for the DE0-CV and the Analog VGA connector is for standard display devices.
Since most VGA displays cannot display at 15kHz, they are enlarged and displayed in SVGA.

There are no plans for the time being. Because I am currently prioritizing the development of FM-TOWNS core.
