Also what are the recommended picture dimensions?

Just a quick heads up, as a registered forum member you can already choose to never see other users signatures at all ever again if you so choose.
Go to your 'User Control Panel' then select the top menu tab 'Board Preferences' then on the left hand side menu 'Edit display options' then just change the option 'Display signatures:' to 'No'
