Is it normal for most demos to not work?

Unread post by siskavard »

I love going through the massive library of C64 demos & seeing what I get. I've noticed however that most of them don't get past the loading phase, or if they do, the graphics are garbled. Just wondering if anyone else experiences this.

I tried several demos (even complex things that use a "hidden" sid mode) and all of them work. One problem you will have is that most demos are for PAL so you have to change the video settings to PAL. Also change the SID if required.

Most of the ones I’ve run work great!

PAL is the key for 95% of demos.

Even the modern demos that really push things work well for me. (Bonzai Unboxed etc.)

I have transfers of many of my old demo floppies from the 80s and early 90s. Those still work as well.

Maybe they also glitch on the new default disk drive plumbing and Dolphin DOS that's non-standard?

Hmm yeah, I've tried switching to PAL for some of these but no dice.

Maybe I'll jot down some of the ones I've been trying & see if anyone else is having the same issue.

Yeah, that's the only way to see what's up.

I haven't had any issues with this myself but happy to test some of the ones you mention and see if they work.

It *could* be your romset
I had a similar issue with my Dragon32 roms. I've had them for years and all worked with emulators but wouldn't run on the MiSTer core.
I downloaded a new set of roms and they all worked.
Just a thought

Bumping old thread. I went to https://c64.ch/productions/demos/toprated and tried a few (in PAL).

Biba 2 worked, but figuring out how to load this one was arcane.

Deus Ex Machina crashes past the title screen if you have two disk drives.

Dutch Breeze locked up after the BML screen (and pressing space) and does not show the cow screen from the screenshots. Using one disk drive didn't help. Swapping disks before pressing space didn't help either. Interestingly the online emulation does the same thing.
