I just tried this, I went and tagged a server mod, quoted him, and said I disagreed with him. He did not ban me, I'll update this post if he bans me tomorrow,.
Not to contribute to drama, but I've also publicly disagreed with the mods there more than once, and I've never been threatened with a ban. I've been there for over a year and they aren't very ban-happy in my experience. No place is perfect (especially not chat rooms!) but the overall atmosphere is pretty chill there.¯\_ (ツ)_/¯
On a more positive note, lots of developers of various projects post there (MiSTer, Analogue, FXPAK, Retroarch, TerraOnion, etc all have their own sections) so it's one of the best places to keep up with developments in the classic gaming scene in general. They also have a very useful newsfeed and recently started doing community challenges, which can be a fun way to learn about/try new games. It's a cool place. I totally recommend it.
I never want being the admin of the server
(Or a mod) to feel like work, so yes our rules are
very relaxed. A lot of our members don't use Discord widely outside of the server so may not understand the freedoms they have on Classic Gaming are not common.
The most obvious being anyone can upload a file / image... most servers don't allow that because people can easily abuse that privilege by uploading XXX content or dangerous files
----------------
I've made a conscious effort to make the mod team as "global" as it possibly can be, We have a mod for most regions of the world even if only a handful seem to actively participate in discussions (
I am guilty of largely ignoring most sections / channels for long periods of time). Things will not always be rainbows, sunshine and lollipops as you mentioned... this is the internet after all. To be honest with everyone I am shocked that after 2.5 years we've not had bigger problems than the handful we have had. Banning people is a last resort as I will defend to my dying day the rights of everyone to express themselves in a constructive manner on the server using whatever type of language they feel is appropriate
(Within logical reason of course).
My indifference towards the actions a mod might take stems from my belief that if I interfere with their decisions they may as well not be a mod in the first place. We do not always see eye-to-eye on situations that arise, and our reactions are different in a lot of cases because we are different people. Most major decisions to remove someone or speak to someone about a behavior problem is discussed in private until we agree on what action if any should be taken. We are only human.
The server is what the community has made it, and being someone that uses Discord a lot for work and pleasure it is my opinion that Classic Gaming is a little slice of heaven on the internet due to how welcoming the community tends to be and how warm the atmosphere is. Though clearly being the admin take what I just said with a grain of salt and judge the server for yourselves.
Crystal is welcome to that thought, and the Canadian in me wants to apologize if they had a bad experience. Can't please everyone.
