MT32-Pi and the Pi Zero 2 W

You may or may not have heard, but the Raspberry Pi team have released the Pi Zero 2 W. There are few differences between this and the Pi 3, the most significant being the Clock speed (200MHz slower at 1GHz), 512MB RAM and of course the price (~£15)

Is this a reasonable alternative to the Pi 3 for an MT32-Pi? And is anyone thinking of experimenting with this?

Hopefully it can be OC by 200mhz and made to work as good as a 3A. I have yet to get a Mt32pi, but this might make me take the plunge.

I know, but I was wondering if the Pi Zero 2 W could be hooked up the same way.
I don't care about the hat if there is a way to integrate it like the SDRAM Module.

These videos have nice benchmarks that shows that the RPI3 and the RPIZ2 do not differ that much.
Afaict (and I'm no expert) it would be on par with RPI3 with +150mhz overclock

a shim board could certainly be made to go from the arduino header to the pi header so that it plugs straight in, barring needing to get power from somewhere else I guess.

At this point I am wondering how much performance gain is possible by running essential features only. So no screen, no output connectors, just the minimal requirement for proper gaming. And would it be enough to compensate for the 150mhz difference?

Building a custom MT32-PI
I will use a "lcd-less" Zero 2 based design - fully integrated in my old case.
The alpha software of MT32-PO works (Munt only)

I will also design a new front of the case to get access to the MT32 Pi sd-card.

I had no user port on my old IO-Board V5.2. It will integrate nicely

I put together a board layout for the Pi Zero 2 W formfactor.
The schematic used was directly based on MT32-pi interface board v2.1 by Alexey Melnikov.
yamimaya makes and sells his version on tindie store (https://www.tindie.com/products/taviens ... pberry-pi/) but it's been out of stock.

The USB and Header are mounted on PCB Back while Switches, OLED, SMD Resistor are mounted on the PCB Front.

I don't know if it would work, but personally I would find it much nicer if the OLED display would show the current time in sleep mode instead of powersaving ...

Which design are you refering to with the additional resistors (MT32-pi interface board by Alexey Melnikov or yamimaya's version sold on tindie store) ?
I don't see any new revision by Alexey Melnikov to the MT32-pi interface board. It's still at v2.1.

The OLED display does have resistors under the board but that should not interfere with the current layout

I've also made a very bodge setup on DIY two layer board to test Pi Zero 2W out. Only if I made display+buttons aligned with MiSTer buttons+leds and move Pi Zero 2W to the back and align SD card with board edge..... To be fair I was trying to make it as slim as possible, and made it wider with two additional mounting holes at the last moment. I realized this after I had PCB done, so used it anyway.

I'm quite liking it, I 3d printed a little stand and attached it to my acrylic case with some standoffs. It's all quite neat.
