I must admit that the tweet seemed bizarre to me and thanks for the clarification but I still do not understand what are these ROMs. Are they some kind of bootleg/homebrew which enabled to use the board with a dead battery without the need to send back the board to have it fixed?

They were developed to bring new life back to dead CPS2 boards that had died with the battery Suicide. When the battery went on a CPS2 you lost all the encryption keys and so the roms you had would never work again.

Also, of more important note, they allow CPS hacks to run, which means MiSTer will soon be able to run certain hacks, like maybe a Final Fight one…

I knew about the batteries built into the RAM chip, I just wanted to confirm these were ROMs especially developed to be able to use the board as is without sending it back to Capcom. Is there a list of these ROMs as I did not see anything new being installed after running the update all script, NAME and HBMAMA Getters did not download anything concerning this update.

I think he just added the ability to have them not the roms. The roms were the same as the original games. But as XtraSmiley says it opens the way to CPS2 homebrew

Update_all pulled down some new phoenix mras for me. You can find them in arcade/alternatives.

Thanks for the info. Do you have some names so I can double check if it worked for me and did the getters downloaded the ROMs?

1944 has one. its in the alternatives. The game is unchanged from the original. It just has a new graphic on boot.

The Phoenix roms change nothing about the game they simply remove
the encryption of the roms so a dead CPS2 board could rise from the ashes hence the name Phoenix.

Thanks, I think I got the mras and I will test later. So at this time the new core and mras do not bring anything really new but just open the door for homebrew/hack. The strange thing is that when I did the update the mame/hbmame getters did not get anything new, I guess I will know more when I test it later in the day.

It shouldn't need to download any new rom files. The phoenix versions are clones of the 'real' ones and the mame getters only download merged romsets, so you already had everything you needed.

Thanks, I always forget that we are using merged ROMs.

This is so we can run decrypted code. I don't like having to encrypt/decrypt/encrypt everything to patch something.

When the game functions the same. The only thing that's fluffed is the key file and object registers move.

Plus, you can use the Phoenix player to listen to music for boards that don't loop audio. It also helped pinpoint a few of the remaining issues in the core.

O. DeeJay mains rejoice!

Why? can't we just patch in memory? I'd rather load a patch on top so I wont have to touch the ROM at all :D

You mean like mame? You can do that if you want. It's available from jtcheat.

The stuff I do will work on actual hardware too.
