CGC Round 4 core: MSX!
This week's random core is the MSX!
MiSTer core info
The core supports MSX/MSX2/Plus/3!
I've always wanted to try the MSX computer, and in particular the original Metal Gear for the MSX. Hideo Kojima once said the MSX was his favorite version of the original Metal Gear, and I could never quite get into the NES version, so this will be one of my three nominations.
Please make your nominations (up to three) for games to add to our first list, and please second others' nominations as well.
When a week has passed, we will again make a game selection at random and begin playing!
CGC Game 3 is open for play!
Nominations (seconded):
Inspecteur Z
Aliens: Alien 2
Space Manbow
King's Valley 2
Knightmare (SCC patch)
SD Snatcher
Vampire Killer

Awesome! MSX is one of those systems I've read a lot about and in my head I know a lot about the computer. But in reality I think I've only tried a couple of games Time to figure out how the core works!

Guys,
I would nominate Inspecteur Z (a.k.a. Buru to Marty Kikiippatsu), a fantastic platform game!!

I have spent countless hours on it at my best friend's house when I was a kid. A lot of fun!

I'll second Inspecteur Z because I have no clue to what it is and you seem really excited about it
And I'll nominate Aliens: Alien 2 because... Aliens.

Do you happen to have a copy of those MSX packs that were posted in the forum (from here: viewtopic.php?t=2599)? The links no longer seem to work, but I notice you had confirmed that you downloaded them at least once.

Re: CGC Round 4 core: MSX!
I had a Yamaha CX5M late 80s early 90s with the 4-operator FM synthesizer SFG-01 module.
I never played any games with it, it was purely a sound machine for the studio and only used with the music software cartridges. Log Bass was a favourite programmed sound I'd made from it. Very acid house.
I'll look through some YouTube and see if there's some games that look interesting. But as always happy to play what others recomend.

Re: CGC Round 4 core: MSX!
I'll second Aliens 2.
I watched a few youtube videos and pulled out some games I'd like to play. Out of those, I will nominate the following:
Metal Gear - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehlAMTh42Ko
King's Valley 2 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnUdAkDAsfg
Feedback - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhC4xJZCqOE
I am NOT nominating the following, but I thought these all looked like fun / quality games:
Doki Doki Penguin Land
Knightmare
Vampire Killer (Castlevania port)
Ninja Kun
Project A2
Salamander/Nemesis 2/3
The Maze of Galious
Parodius
Sofia (reminds me a bit of Celeste)
Pifall
Bosconian
Aleste
Firehawk
Zanac / EX
Snake It
Hype
Pippols
Re: CGC Round 4 core: MSX!
Space Manbow - Looks like a reasonable shooter for a mid 8bit machine.

I also like the look of King's Valley 2, so I'll second that.
Aliens looks a bit clunky, but then a lot of games on this system do.
I love Bosconian, played that in the arcades a lot back then. But I'd rather play it on another platform like the X68000.

Re: CGC Round 4 core: MSX!
I was hoping the random core would be the X68000 this time. I need the motivation to solder my MT32 Pi Lite hardware together finally, and I'm certain I'd do it if that were the random pick. But I'm still plenty happy to finally play some MSX games too.Hetzen wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 4:24 pm Space Manbow - Looks like a reasonable shooter for a mid 8bit machine.

It's another core I have no idea about. The games look amazing on it.PistolsAtDawn wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 5:15 pm I was hoping the random core would be the X68000 this time. I've not got the MT-32 Pi. I had an AWE-32 Soundcard for the PC back then, with a Yamaha DB50XG daughter board, so had great sound from DOS games. But maybe getting the Sharp going may tempt me.

Re: CGC Round 4 core: MSX!
This looks like an interesting core, one I've never tried before. I'll second Metal Gear if it hasn't already been, but won't nominate anything myself, as I'm not at all familiar with the library. I'll just run whatever gets picked.
