DC Extension Cable?

Unread post by JayRockets »

Would it be okay to use a short DC extension cable with the de10, or do these drop voltage like the inline switches?

You should be okay as long as the Extension not too long. Yes the length of wire will drop voltage.
If you want to use a DC extension cord, the ones rated for CCTV Cameras work well for this purpose.

if you are worried, or if the DC extension don't work, you can try to use a extension cable from your outlet to your AC/DC converter instead.

I bought this set on Amazon back in October 2020. I use just one of the cables + the switch for my MiSTer and it's been really great! I haven't noticed any issues. I do use the USB to go hub rather than the stackable USB board though, in case that matters.

I need a short DC cable, 6-10 inches, to go from the de10 port out through the cable gland in my enclosure because the plug and ferrite beads on my mean well psu are just too big, and it would be convenient to not have a long cord and psu teathered to the box. Plus it would be a nice added safety feature, in case someone tripped on the cord it would be more likely to unplug at the extension instead of possibly damaging the psu cord, gland, or de10 connector.

I went with this: https://www.adafruit.com/product/5607
Does it look like it should be okay? All this info is like reading Chinese to me:

That should work fine, especially if you are putting it into a custom case.

Yeah I'm making a custom case. Adafruit must have just came out with that because I bought all my other panel mounts (usb, hdmi, ethernet) from them last month and they didnt have one for dc. Now all they need is one for a micro sd card, but in the mean time I jb welded my sd card extension to a metal L bracket and screwed it in just behind a vent slot.
