DNS Not Working Most of the Time

Unread post by 8bitAndy »

Hi, my MiSTer has an intermittent issue with the DNS not resolving. The problem sometimes goes away after a reboot, but I'm experiencing it on 90% of boots. My MiSTer uses the same DHCP server as my other devices, which all have working DNS.

The network is working. SMB works, I can browse the SD card from my PC. SSH works. I can log into the DE-10 from my PC.

Some symptoms are:
Pinging from SSH:
ping google.com
ping: socket: Address family not supported by protocol
ping: google.com: Temporary failure in name resolution

Running update_all script:
No Internet connection, please try again later.

Running the Downloader script gives:
No Internet connection, please try again later.

Running update_i2c2oled script:
Resolving www.tty2tft.de ... Failed: Temporary failure in name resolution
wget: unable to resolve host address 'www.tty2tft.de'

I use a combination Wifi/Bluetooth USB adapter. It used to work 100% of the time.

What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Difficult from the far side, but not impossible. Please post the following output:
From command

Code: Select all

ip a
and from command

Code: Select all

ip r
If you like also attach the files /tmp/messages and /tmp/resolv.conf. That way we are getting an overview which (network) device is doing what and where.

As a quick sanity check, be sure you're not using both an Ethernet and a wireless connection at the same time. If you have both, use only Ethernet and turn the wireless off.

Re: DNS Not Working Most of the Time

Good job and explains at least some things. Your WiFi seems to be "shaky". Have a look at my snippet below: Your USB adapter is connecting correctly at first (green), is losing it's connection some seconds later, throwing a "Authentication request to the driver failed" some more seconds later (red) and is turning to a link-local address at the end (orange). The latter is the cause why can't connect to the internet (your IP address is 169.254.45.59 instead of 192.168.0.150).

Things you could do/check for now:
  • check /media/fat/linux/wpa_supplicant.conf on MiSTer. Did you set country there to the same country as your router is set to?
  • For further testing use a LAN cable instead of the WiFi dongle and report it's success or failure
  • Check and update your router / accesspoint, if possible

Thanks for looking into this.
My wpa_supplicant.conf file just has the ssid and psk, no country is listed. Is this required? I don't see a country in my router settings.
I am running the same SSID on two access points, and at 2ghz and 5ghz on each, for a total of four connection points. Could this be an issue?

Troubleshooting

If you are having trouble with staying reliably connected to your WiFi, try separating the SSID's for your 2.4GHz and your 5GHz connections on your Router's firmware configuration. This should help solve the problem. If not, it is possible there is something wrong with your WiFi adapter, or it is not fully supported by the current build of Linux for the MiSTer project.

I updated the access points and created a new SSID that is just one access point and just 2Ghz. No luck. I'm thinking it may be the hardware.
One thing I notice is that when I run the Wifi script, it spends a long time on the "Saving" screen, with it blinking every half second or so. Is this normal?

This is not absolutely necessary, but may led to "wrong" channels or frequencies and could be a problem. But I'm wondering that there's no country setting in your router...it should be. Nobody knows in advance where it will be bought and where it will be used - see link above. Just try to set the country setting in your MiSTer's wpa_supplicant.conf to see if it helps.

Maybe this link is of help, too.

Re: DNS Not Working Most of the Time

It is working now.

I confirmed my Wifi radios are set to US and edited the wpa_supplicant.conf file. Originally it had only the WIFI SSID and passcode:

network={
ssid="MySSID"
psk="password"
}

I edited it with the additional config from the _wpa_supplicant.conf file, including country:

ctrl_interface=/run/wpa_supplicant
update_config=1
country=US

network={
ssid="MySSID"
psk="password"
}

The DNS has worked over several MiSTer reboots so hopefully this is a permanent fix.

Thanks for your help!

Congrats! I am amazed but glad that it was only the missing country tag. Still interesting to see that often it's just the little things that cause big disturbances.

I bet it's related to this error message:

Code: Select all

wlan0: CTRL-EVENT-REGDOM-CHANGE init=CORE type=WORLD
I read that as defaulting the region to 'worldwide', which I'm guessing was not compatible with your router frequency settings. I was going to ask about that, but RealLarry got there almost immediately.

Good point, I haven't noticed "WORLD" by myself and there is no such country code in the list of channels or frequencies. Looks like a default for the driver module which can't run w/o any country code. The missing country code was my first guess as his WiFi was working in somewhat way and is the most common mistake users aren't aware of.

That's not a problem I'd seen before, so I'll try to remember it for next time.

Seems like either the driver or wpa_supplicant should pick a default, ideally a safe subset that works in any country. But there's a counter-argument, too: if it just works, then users may never know that they have other frequencies they could use. So perhaps the opposite should happen: both wpa_supplicant and the driver should refuse to work without an explicit country code, and throw an error to that effect.

Signed for the opposite/2nd choice with a big fat warning that the user is trying to enable WiFi w/o reading the docs before, where country code is expressly mentioned. ;)
We are having a similar "problem" with some users and our tty2*** display projects: "...No, I haven't RTFM's, you know? No time, no desire..."

I appreciate your expert help. My 2 cents is that a simple change to avoid this would be a change to the Wifi script that asks for your country code. People like me who avoid in-depth configuration are going to run that script instead of editing the wpa_supplicant file by hand. The Wifi setup docs say it's the easiest way to configure Wifi. I ran that script about 20 times trying to debug this.

Thanks again for helping me fix this!

Signed. The wifi.sh script, which came from the RetroPie project, already contains a function to check for a missing country setting, but is called by function "gui_wifi", which itself is disabled.
I'll try to reproduce the script to eventually open an issue on github for that.
