Want to Purchase a MiSTer Confused About Video Options and Display Compatibility

Unread post by ALCF98 »

I’m wanting to purchase a MiSTer FPGA setup primarily for playing NES, SNES, GBA, and especially PSX games. The problem I have is I really don’t understand all the video options. I’ve spent hours trying to read up on it and still clueless lol.

What I’m wanting to know is what options should I choose to get the most accurate video but also best looking picture?

I will be using it with either a 1440p or 4K display, which leads me to my next question. When looking for a display what should I be looking for? When looking at the spec sheets for monitors they say nothing about things like scaling and don’t seem to have weird resolutions like 2048x1536p.

Many thanks in advance!

Forget 1536p, there's literally 1 screen that does that and it's tiny.

What I use, which is I believe the best setup possible is:

1440p + VRR (make sure it goes under 50hz) + 4:3 option in 1440p mode

You can't really do 1440p on the Mister, can you? Isn't it 1920x1440, rather than the correct 2560x1440?

Yes you can do 1920*1440p which is perfect if your monitor does 4:3 in 1440p.

I looked it up, btw, and the Mister's video can't do 2560x1440p, it doesn't have enough video bandwidth. If you set it to that mode, it's really 1280x1440p, but with the pixels repeated. It sounds like getting the cores to work in that mode isn't easy.

1920x1440p, on the other hand, is within spec and is a real resolution, if the monitor can handle it.

I've run MiSTer on both a 1440p and 4k display at 1920x1080 and it looks good despite using the monitors' internal scalers. I think 1920x1440 may take some fiddling with settings in some situations to get it to display 1:1 pixels which is why I didn't even try it, but if for some reason I switch the MiSTer back to the 1440p monitor I will try, because if it is possible to run at native pixel size on a 1440p display that would be great.
