I also have a MS-DOS VHD and tried to boot from it -> nothing.

Mea culpa. It also do not boot with JukoST. It is entirely possible that I never tried it under PCXT (it comes from my AO486 folder). Instead I used the VHD created here viewtopic.php?p=64696#p64696.
It boots under micro 8088. Note: it does not have any CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT.

Last test and giving up for now:
I renamed FDAUTO.BAT and FDCONFIG.SYS to something else, with no real hope, but FreeDOS does not boot.

After thinking about it the micro8088 BIOS with FreeDOS never worked for me. See this post and a few following it. I have been chasing ghosts.
This is a problem for the Quick Start guide which mentions the micro8088 as the BIOS to use. Changing it to any other BIOS could become a Slow and Painful Start Guide for some users as these other BIOSes have to be built due to Copyright issues.
