PC Monitors That Support 1920x1440

Hello,

I need some suggestions of PC monitors that can do this. I’ve been searching long and hard for PC monitors and their manuals and haven’t been lucky.

I was thinking of buying an LG or a Asus ROG Strix XG279Q in hopes that it would work.

I want to dual output my 1920x1440 Mister to my 4KTV, PC Monitor once I can get one, and my PVM 14L5 for triple 1440 Mister display.

Please help my dreams come true.

I can't think of a manual that says they support this, but I have yet to use a 1440p or 4K monitor that doesn't.

I'm not sure if it'll be the same for that monitor but it doesn't work at all on my PG279AQ but it did work on my MX27AQ. I'm wondering if it's less likely to work on the high refresh rate monitors?

Many people with g-sync monitors have reported problems with 1920x1440 actually! This is thought to be related to NVidia's g-sync module which performs all scaling duties, so it should not be an issue with most non-gsync monitors.

my LG UltraGear 32GN650-B 32 (FreeSync & G-Sync compatible) work fine in 1920x1440p (work great 50hz, 55hz, 57hz etc.. freeSync active)
and my LG 32GK850G-B (Native G-Sync with hardware) doesn't work in 1920x1440p

FWIW, I'm using an LG 27GN850-B. I think it's been replaced by a slightly newer GP series, but I haven't bothered to look.

It suffers from black crush, so I'm not super enthusiastic about it as a movie monitor, but it generally plays very well with the Mister. 1920x1440 works flawlessly, and vsync_adjust=2 works fine almost all the time. There are a few really old arcade cores that haven't been updated to the new framework (eg, both versions of Frogger), and they won't sync correctly with this LG, but they're the only ones I have trouble with.

The PSX core is famous for being difficult with monitors, and while I've only extensively played a few games, I haven't had any problem with it at all. I run the stock video settings in vsync_adjust=2, and everything just works. I don't usually even see flickers; the VRR support seems to really help there.

The default stand will not rotate, probably its biggest flaw. It uses a VESA 100 mount, so you could rig up rotation if you wanted, but it doesn't come stock.

Compaq P1220 supports 1920 x 1440 up to 75hz.

The Dell S2721DGFA supports 1920x1440p too, really nice Freesync monitor with 165Hz.

I just want to thank all of you guys posting. I'm not going to give up on my fantasy to have this awesome feature on a PC monitor and not having to change a single setting on my 4K TV that's a Sony.

I ended up buying the Gundam XG279Q. Figured it would be good as a collector's item. If it doesn't work out then I will go the LG route.

This is not a native resolution for any monitor so it will look like poop. It’s better to use a crt or a native resolution for an actual quality picture.

The Input lag on this XG279Q seems ridiculous high in 60Hz modes (including Variable Refresh Rate @60Hz) WTF? 32ms, and that today? Variable refresh rate @170Hz is much better though. :shock:

There's zero scaling on a 1440p display as long as you aren't stretching the sides. On most displays you will have big black pillarboxes on either side with the 1920x1440 centered in the middle.

Yep, it's actually a 1920x1440 resolution framed inside the native 2560x1440p. Modern monitors doesn't scale/stretch this per default. At least not the ones i've seen the last few years.

That's not true at all. My LG 27GN850 recognizes 1920x1440, and displays it exactly. It even says that the resolution is 1920x1440 in the onscreen menu. It shows black bars on the sides of its 16:9 screen, and a pixel-perfect 4:3 image in the center.

My XG279Q-G came today. Took it out of the box and brought it straight to where my Mister was located. It was able to display 1920x1440. I ended up having to turn off VRR though because it was stuttering. Once I was happy I put it on my computer desk.

The other problem I encountered for cores like NES, SNES, and PC Engine was that I have to not use Integer Scale Resolution (4) and had to use Use integer scale only (1) or Integer Scale Resolution (5) to get that narrower NES picture that I like with square pixels. If you like a wider aspect ratio for the pictures on certain cores then it's not a problem. (4) was my go to setting for my 4K Sony which always displays proper. I'm not happy about this, but (5) seems like it's going to be my go to setting for the display compatibility for now. The cores that hurt the most with this are Genesis with it's add-ons and GBA with the borders. Genesis works fine with (4) depending on the game you play, but GBA doesn't. I'll probably just make (5) my secondary profile depending on the core I want to play on my Monitor.

It was nice to see triple output happening for the Mister. Situationary in front of a big TV, an old CRT, and at a computer desk.

vscale_mode=4 or 5 are not at all the tools for square pixels. Leave it at vscale_mode=1 (or even 0), instead go into the core's video settings and toggle scaling from normal to HV Integer (horizontal-vertical). If the + or - option don't match up for some reason you should probably look into calculating custom aspect ratio instead.

vscale_mode 4 and 5 alter the actual output resolution to match the nearest vertical scale. So instead 1440p with the genesis core, you end up with 224*6=1344p. If your monitor stretches instead of centering (1:1) you will introduce interpolation and needlessly so. I would only consider this for option for edge-to-edge scaling on 4k+ displays or high-res CRTs.

4 and 5 do not do horizontal integer scaling at all, instead they choose an aspect ratio to target when reducing the horizontal resolution to match the vertical resolution. 4 will use the core's real aspect ratio, which is typically 4:3 and not square pixels. 5 will instead use the aspect ratio of your video_mode resolution. (so 960x720 would become 896x672, while 1280x720 would become 1195x672.)

FWIW, I've never noticed problems with 1920x1440 on my LG 27GN850. It's a cheap monitor, and as I said, suffers from black crush, but it works really well with the Mister. If you're having that much trouble with your XG monitor, it might be worth returning it. I would expect newer LGs in that price range to be just as good or better.

I used to always do 1 when I built my Mister. But I ended up going with 4 and 5 later on just because of the issue I was having with PC Engine overscan being enabled and wanting to see the entire screen. I didn't think 4 or 5 was hurting anything. In fact all of my core settings have always been set to Narrow HV Integer, especially for NES and SNES.

My XG displays all the other cores fine and puts everything in the center and doesn't stretch them thanks to 1920x1440 and 5, NES worked fine on 1 like it should to begin with. But if I want borderless SNES I have to do 5. 4 stretches the image for those cores. But I feel like borderless Genesis and GBA are issues. 4 worked better for them, but GBA feels like it's too stretched inward / not wide enough.

Update: Now that I'm looking. It almost looks as if SNES and Genesis look like they aren't integer scaled with 5... Would they look okay with the Sony 4K TV I have that's an X50J? I was using that with 4 for borderless SNES and Genesis in mind. I need to stare at the screen. NES looked fine to me and perfectly integered scaled on the Monitor. Maybe the monitor just doesn't handle the feature well with specific cores. Set it back to 1 on the second profile for monitor purposes... I don't suppose 2560x1440 for pixel repetition would help? I just feel like the 4KTV is okay for this. But the monitor isn't unless I want interpolation which I'm trying to avoid.

Pursuing a borderless screen on a 1440p monitor is fundamentally incompatible with integer scaling on most console cores! What you are doing is trying to get integer scaling on the Mister side, but then outputting a sub-1440p resolution. Your monitor is then interpolating to fill the screen. Bring up the HUD menu while in game and push left and the info tab will tell you the actual resolution the Mister is outputting.

In general monitor interpolation is on the crap side, so thats why I'd usually lean towards letting the Mister do it if you want borderless. vscale_mode=0, and in the core video options scaling=normal, go with some interpolation for your horizontal filter and the same or scanlines for the vertical (Mister's gotten quite a bit better at non-integer scanlines so its worth trying.)

That whole idea of getting an integer scale and then pushing out sub-native resolution IMO makes some more sense with 4K TVs, because A) there's a lot more pixels to work with on interpolation, B) typically the scalers are better in TVs than monitors, and C) you can't output native 4K anyway. You can also get cleaner horizontal scaling if your width exactly matches an integer scale at some weird aspect ratio, and then have the TV force it to 4:3. These principles are used in atrac's custom integer scaling mode lines, although that's quite a lot of the INI file occupied by individual video modes for various cores. But getting actual horizontal integer scaling out of modes 4 and 5 I've found extremely hit and miss, so Atract's approach is more effective.

Thank you for the info. I feel like a crazy person.

I'm using a third profile just for 1 Integer Scale only as a safety precaution if I ever want to use my monitor to play games. If I use Super Attract Mode, I'd probably use 4 or 5 and not care about how it looks on the monitor. My 4th Profile can be one for just interpolation some day. I don't think there's anything wrong with my monitor besides how you said monitor scaling was garbage. I think it is a nice monitor even though something like the LGs would probably do it better

Unless some sort of new feature comes along like 4 and 5 did. As long as the 4KTV is capable of displaying 4 without interpolation all is well.

The monitor scaling might not look horrible for this application. I just question if its any better than letting the Mister fill to 1440p on a 1440p monitor, which is far simpler to set up. Odds are the monitor is at least slightly worse. Usually latency is the priority over good interpolation on computer monitors, especially since typically these days you use native resolution.

What I do know is that chasing horizontal integer scaling can be maddening, because I did get interested in it for VGA CRT and a 4K screen. I found modes 4 and 5 really inconsistent when you had a core that changes horizontal resolution, like the pc-engine or even mega CD. Right now I am just going for 1080p 5x cut on my 4K screen for sanity's sake, although that's probably less ideal for most arcades.
