Apple II / Square Analog Joystick Gate

Unread post by rhester72 »

At long last, I know why I can't play Karateka with my PS3 stick!

Using this:

I can very clearly see that the PS3's analog stick does NOT use a square gate, but instead one with rounded corners.

Given that Karateka expects very square corners for running (up + right), this is a problem. LOL

Are there any analog sticks (short of something like a flightstick, which would feel ridiculous) that don't have this issue? What are others using on the IIe?

A lot of the logitech controllers have square gates, dual action was the one I had. Fairly decent if I remember and theyre really cheap and common. Might be worth a shot.

Never tried Karateka with it though.

The best bet probably is to use a digital stick/dpad to run it.
To my knowledge the gulikit hall sensor based gamepad should a square block.
At least the retrofitted ones in my steam deck do (they are basically the same but only the parts used in the gamepad)
But in the end you probably might be happier with an arcade/fightstick for this game.

The core - and the Apple - will only respond to analog input, since that's what the original stick was.

I'm going to try the Logitech Rumblepad 2 as soon as it arrives.
