Seeing flickering strips in TubroGrafx 16 games

Unread post by Krathoon »

For some reason, it am seeing flickering pixel strips on Magical Chase and Keith Courage.

They run vertically across the screen. I tried switching the HDMI cable and it did not fix it. I have not noticed it on other cores. Also, the strips do not run through the menu when you bring it up.

Maybe some bad roms?

If you have a picture, it might be more helpful; this description is vague.

I will try some different roms first.
The controller from the Turbo mini actually works on the MiSTer. That was nice.

I changed the resolution to 1080p and it went away for a little bit.
So, it is some kind of video issue. I have tried this on a tv and a monitor and the same problem shows up.

The fact that it went away makes this seem like it is fixable.

This also showed up on the SNES core, so it is not a core problem. I did not happen when I ran an arcade game.

I fixed the problem. I set the vsync to low lag and set HDMI to game mode. So, it was a video setting issue.

Edit: The problem came back. I swapped out the Nano board with this extra one I got. It fixed the problem.

So, that is what I get for buying a used MiSTer. Something went wrong with the video on the board.

So, it seems like the HDMI output on the "bad" board has artifacts. I could try using the analog out.

I am wondering if scrubbing the HDMI with a toothbrush would fix the problem.

Ok. I seemed to have fixed my Mister problem. I unplugged the HDMI cable while it was running and plugged it back in. I guess it reset something.

So, if you have faint lines showing up on your screen, do that.

Edit. The problem came back. I ordered some contact cleaner to spray in the HDMI port.

We would have to see a picture. If it's happening on other cores then it could be your HDMI port. It sounds like an issue I had with my first DE-10 Nano where it would show artifacts that were either solid, wiggle, or not show at all. I tried different cables and monitors but same issue. Luckily I was able to exchange it within the first month of owning it.

Is the cable secure in the port? Mine was a little loose and showed these lines with the smallest movement. Here's what mine was doing.

Definitely possible that there is some dirt in the hdmi port. If that’s not it, it could be a problem with the board.

Yeah. My problem looks like the first picture you have. I'll try the contact cleaner.

I unplugged and plugged in the HDMI and wiggled it up and down. Now, the problem seems to have gone away.
So, it is some kind of connection issue.

I think wiggling it up an down fixed it. Probably scraped the metal together a little bit.

I don't know if I will spray the contact cleaner on it now. I will see if the problem comes back.
