Hi Folks,
is there anything I have to consider when buying an adapter for my old competition pro?
Can I buy one of these?

Or is this not going to work?
I am not able to DIY anything...

That one will probably work fine, don't know what latency it has. I have an USB adapter with two ports and found out its latency isn't great.
I have a Daptor D9 (and Daptor PDL) that have very good latency and work with a lot of controller types. They are a bit expensive though, especially with the added shipping to Europe.
I recommend getting a DaemonBite-based DE9 adapter, since random adapters off Amazon often introduce latency. Several of the MiSTer shops sell it.
That device you linked on Amazon will not work. It's a serial to usb adapter, not a 9-pin joystick to usb adapter.
Thank you all. I will hunt down a Daemonbite adapter.
Oof, good catch! I had a quick glance and didn't notice that.
I use the Monster Joysticks adapter and find it to work very well.
If you want to save some money, you can built it yourself, it is a fun excerise, if you want to learn how to use a soldering iron:
I just bought the MiSTer Addon Reflex Adapt. It looks like it checks all the right boxes in terms of latency, etc.

Unfortunately it doesn't support Commodore 64/Amiga (yet). But perhaps something to watch out for in the future.
EDIT: Looks like that mode is coming up soon.

Daemonbite adaptor or Timville 3daptor/4daptor are good options
People make them or you can build one yourself cheaply
Timville sells kits for his adaptors on Tindie
Thanks to all for these great discussions. Im in the same boat so ordered one of these:

C64/Amiga joysticks already work with MisterAddons Reflex-Adapt using the Genesis cable with the latest firmware 1.08. Just select "Combo 19:"

Nice, I've updated and it didn't show up. I'll see if I can force the update.

I think this firmware was released after my post. In any case it doesn't show up here via the Update All, but perhaps it will in a couple of days.
I've got up to Combo 14 with the Update All script.

Really there is not much between Atari/C64/Amiga wiring and Megadrive/Mastersystem the main difference is more button support
