MiSTer Not In A Shell Static Shock From My Finger Fried It

Unread post by futurepr0n »

As the subject says - I don’t have a mister case but I have an analog io board and usb hub but I went to hit reset and there was a static electricity bridge from my finger to the unit and now I have been unable to get the nano to boot. I took all component apart only left is the nano.. i have lights but I don’t know what they mean.

Is there any way to get it back or check for if it’s alive? NIC jack is not active

It's a long shot, but try another Micro SD card.

Hey thank you that actually worked. I put the old microsd card into a pc and it was still readable fine though. What do you suppose I should do? Should I not attempt to put the ram and usb and io board back on? And should I absolutely buy an enclosure

Is there anyway testing connecting those components could fry anything?

With the old SD card, you should check if it is actually writable. Sometimes if there is a problem, SD cards will basically turn read only. The way to check this is to open the mister.ini file, change something save it, close the editor and then open it again. If the changes kept then its probably fine. Just reflash the SD card and see if it boots from it.
If not... no idea, might be still some form of issue on the board or within the SD card itself that the nano doesn't like.

I concur, I would check to see if the old SD card still can be written to or not.
It could be a file got corrupted, but that speculation on my part.

As for adding components back to the DE 10 Nano, I would do it one part at a time.
Test to see if the SD ram works, if it does Remove it and check another. This eliminates what could be the cause and isolate any issues.

Worst case scenario you can use something else for a USB Hub for a few days while waiting for a replacement, or go without an IO board.
SD Ram going out is going to be the one you can't just quick fix.

I would invest in some sort of case, even if it's just two flat pieces of plastic for the top and bottom
It is my great regret that we live in an age that is proud of machines that think and suspicious of people who try to.

By habit I always touch the metal part of my desk for a couple seconds before touching the MiSTer. It sounds like the MicroSD itself got fried (which I've had happen before) so you might be good.

I have used the default sd card and linux boots up on the TV no problem, but I don't seem to get any thing from ethernet - the usb works, is there a way to manually test the ethernet ? do you need to if down and if up to get that enabled - or should it be active from boot?

I reflashed that same SD card and even though I got the mr fusion boot screen it would not go into the mister after the initial install. The machine boots but nothing goes on the hdmi signal after that. I have tried flashing a new SD card with Mr Fusion and same thing happens. After it reboots it goes to no signal. Weird... Why would it be working for XFCE and linux and stuff but then on MiSTer it will not display?

I can put the sd card in a new/different Nano and it works fine. So something seems off with the HDMI when it tries to load the MiSTer OS? Is there anyway to test stuff ? I wonder why it doesn't work but XFCE would be fine?!

I experienced the same issue a year ago: viewtopic.php?t=2050

Same symptoms, mister won't run at all but the mister fusion and de10 sd card work fine. I was even able to run the fpga demos from the de10 linux image for fast Fourier transform and blinking lights fine.

I bought a new de10 nano but the old one is still collecting dust.

Keeping an eye open if you find any solution. Having two de10 is better than one :P

So - I talked to terasic who aren't keen on taking my device back for RMA, although Im trying to persuade them as its under 90 days from purchase, but given that XFCE is booting and not the MiSTer Software, they are not really offering me a route to fix. They are suggesting to keep trying with MiSTer team, so hopefully maybe we can figure something out..

One suggestion they had was for me to change MSEL to 0000 - this allowed the Nano to boot up to MiSTer - but did not give me HDMI signal (whereas XFCE still displays over HDMI with no issue).

I was wondering if maybe a resolution got fried!? Because the Nano likes to boot in 1280x720 and XFCE is 1024x768 (or different)

Here is the output over serial from booting the Nano with MiSTer in the SD card and MSEL to 0000

My Issue is
GPI[31]==1. FPGA is uninitialized or incompatible core loaded.

Is there a way to determine what exactly is wrong there in order to propose to Terasic where to explore for potential repair?

My Issue is
GPI[31]==1. FPGA is uninitialized or incompatible core loaded.

Is there a way to determine what exactly is wrong there in order to propose to Terasic where to explore for potential repair?
EDIT: Ok, it looks like when MSEL is set to 0000 - it will throw the GPI issue on both nanos. So this was not as helpful determining any issue.

The main thing seems to be hanging right at:
reading menu.rbf
2398284 bytes read in 201 ms (11.4 MiB/s)
reading /linux/zImage_dtb

Is there something that gets done between reading the bytes and then trying to load the /linux/zInage_dtb - that differs from the XFCE loading of Linux?

Its really hard to wrap my head around why the thing can load up to XFCE no problem, but the MiSTer OS hangs at this position

You should search the forum: recently someone had a similar problem (may be as I don't remember exactly) and he had to use some voodoo to bring his DE10-nano back from the dead.
Sorry if cannot pinpoint it but it is a relatively recent post (1-2 months). It can also be a different problem but the way he resuscitated it was very odd and made almost no sense.

Thank you jca - I am going to try this as I really am on a last resort it looks like anyways - but their issue I don't think they could even boot into XFCE, which oddly enough I am able to. It looks like a little bit of work and will set aside a good hour block to attack this and report back. Imagine this goes successful.. Image

Hey, just wanted to say that I found a possible solution. It worked in my DE10, and because your problem was very similar to mine, it is worth the shot. Please check out here: viewtopic.php?t=6432

Hello arago.
I have a broken DE10-Nano with identical symptoms as the one's you have posted and potentially fixed. I do get a reading from the reset pin 17 shorted to ground. Do you by chance happen to have images and cores that you have updated recently that you could share?
