MiSTer on RF TV

Unread post by Crystal »

I've tried to get mister working with an old RF only TV. Using I/O board 6.0, SOC auto, jumper on 5V, together with
VGA to Composite from Antonio Villlena [set to pal]
https://www.antoniovillena.es/store/pro ... o-adapter/
and mini AV to RF from unknown brand [set to 67.25MHz]
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Converter-Fema ... B07ZV698HB
this in my ini file https://pastebin.com/gNw2z2rz
I have tried to set it to both OVR and AUTO for SOG, ntsc and pal on composite adapter and 61.25MHz and 67.25MHz on rf adapter.
This was the 'best' I could achieve. While still no inteligeble image, it gave me clear sound. from the io boards 3.5mm output to rf adapters audio cinch.

Why not try the simple way, try using the main HDMI out (no I/O board):

1.) Connect the main HDMI cable from the MiSTer DE-10 Nano board to this HDMI to RCA adapter:
https://www.amazon.com/RCA-GANA-Composi ... B01KXI8LZE
2.) Connect HDMI to RCA Adapter to this RCA to RF converter (which I see you already have):
https://www.amazon.com/CIMPLE-CO-Compos ... B06XC9Y3VB
3.) Plug coaxial cable to the ancient relic of a TV and enjoy!
(should be able to work with default 'MiSTer.ini' settings)

Just a suggestion, not something I can guarantee would work for your specific setup.

P.s. Or better yet... perhaps just get a straight-up all-in-one solution w/out daisy-chaining anything and get yourself an HDMI to RF Coaxial Converter/Adapter (the only other one I found was in Radio Shack, and they're sold out):

I first want to try get the current setup working, before I 'have to' spend more money. Strangely, when in mister menu, I can get it to display the menu itself but very faintly. that was best image I could get it to output

Sell your I/O board, take 10 bucks out of that sale and you've got something that could work in tandem with your current setup (no i/o board required) and some extra cash if you're hard up for cash...

If it were a 6.1XL I/O board, I'd be interested in purchasing it from you (even if the VGA component was broken, I want one to test out the x68000 core and to test the SNAC packs w/ original controllers ;-)

It could be a multitude of issues I'm afraid. I will say this though:

Power over VGA needs to be on
SOG needs to be off
Composite sync needs to be on
All scalers need to be off

As an aside, I know you don't want to spend more money on this but I will shortly be releasing something you may be interested in :)

Composite sync needs to be on
All scalers need to be off
-you mean VGA pin set to 5V? i had that the entire time
-I assume you mean OVF, since other option is AUTO
-Composite sync in ini is on
-VGA scaler is off, only other scaler i have configured is vscale_mode=1
with all that, this was the 'best' i could manage to get[its supposed to be megaman battle network 2 on gba

I mean the SOG switch on the IO board, if you are using an official IO board that is.

Yea, the IO board has AUTO and OVR switch positions for SOG.

Any Megadrive/Genesis 2 cable can be used with it. So the original RF cable, composite cable or RGB cable. Whichever your CRT TV supports (or you like to use, personally I like RF :) )

Yes so with my adapter you can use RF directly with the MD2 RF cable.

Of course I'm not ready to release it yet, but will probably only be a few weeks.

Did you manage to get it working via RF in the end? I'm trying to get mine to work that way too. I've been plugging the Scart into the VHS player, with RF out, but.. no luck.

What I do is (I use direct video):

HDMI to VGA adapter
https://pt.aliexpress.com/item/1005004630556157.html

VGA cable

Active Y/C adapter from Retrocastle
https://pt.aliexpress.com/item/1005005267629034.html

Composite cable

RF modulator (I don't think this model is available outside of Brazil, but I think any RF modulator should to work. Misteraddons released a good one recently)
https://produto.mercadolivre.com.br/MLB ... 0-220v-_JM

I tried connecting the RF modulator directly to the TV, but the TV started making a strange noise, so since I had a RF attenuator laying around, I connected it to the modulator's coaxial output and it solved the issue (the model below is just an example of a RF attenuator, I don't know the exact model of the one I have)
https://www.amazon.com/Phillmore-Cable- ... 00OGL9MN0/

Coaxial cable to the TV

It works flawlessly with my CRT TV.
The SOG switch is set to on, this is my mister.ini file https://pastebin.com/VkPiEbCg.
Don't forget to connect every adapter to a external power source (can even be Mister's own USB port).
