Hard drive speed

Unread post by Solskogen »

Hi!

What's you hard drive speed (according to sysinfo)?
For some strange reason I've seen two kinds of speeds. One of my hard drive images gives me ~6MB/s, but all others only gives me ~2MB/s. I've looked and looked, but as far as I can see the configuration (filesystem, transfer mask etc) are the same.
AmigaOS 3.1.4, and PFS/PDS3 is what I use.

Wait, WHAT?

How are you getting that performance??? Mine's pushing around 2,600,000 bytes/sec.

What kind of witchraft is this???

Maybe the person who wrote the benchmarking software included a "bullshitting" routine.

I recall reading of an Amiga virus that made the floppy drive run 8x faster (with the side effect that it wrecked the drive in a fairly short time). I tried for years to catch that mythical virus. If it can be done for the floppy maybe the HDD is possible too. This is an even less likely explanation to the one above.

Maybe it's related to clock speed, filesystem format, speed of the MicroSD/Storage device used or some settings either inside the OS or MiSTer setup. This incredibly unspecific explanation is my personal bet.

I think that virus was about as legit as the original Amiga 'emulator' for PC. I tried to get past that damned KIckstart screen for _weeks_. LOL

The speed I get is what sysbench tells me :-) It might be lying, for all I know.
But the culprit seems to the size of the disk. Bigger HDFs gets higher speed. Try with a 8GB HDF. I get ~2MB with smaller ones (256M) but ~6MB with a 8GB HDF.

Maybe its using the "fast filesystem" by default, I'm sure there was an option when formatting on the A1200 (its over 25 years ago, I could be wrong).

...a misnomer if ever there was one. :) (Well, OK, fast compared to floppy...)

The speedup that sysinfo reports happens on PFS as well.
