USB Hub Ports Seem to Be Dead

Unread post by retroplace »

Hi there,

from one day to the other, none of the six USB ports seem to be working anymore (I have a 3.5 Amps power supply feeding the MiSTer). The BT-Dongle is no longer recognized ("BT not available in BT screen"), neither is any keyboard. The keyboard does not seem to get any power (CAPS LOCK led does not turn on).

Could it be that the USB board is dead? Is this a "common" fault?

Any insights highly appreciated.

Best,

Armin

My first usb board months ago died after 3 years using it.

Even had tried to change the power supply but the problems was not it,

Bought a new one with the latest connector (the one with usb and toggle switch) and it is working fine.

It's the 2.1 version and it gets its power via a bridge between the two boards. None of the LED turn on, I think the board is dead.

What form does that bridge take on yours? More specifically, where did you obtain it? (That bridge can occasionally get finicky if it's a metal "finger" that extends up to the DE-10 versus a plug.)

Yes, it is the tricky one with the metal "finger". But that is connecting well. Unfortunately, I do not have a micro usb to female USB at hand, so I can not connect a controller directly to test if the "original" micro usb works.

It may look like it's connecting well, but if that power is lost, the ports shut down...I saw exactly the same on mine, and you could 'bump' the MiSTer and everything would come back. My solution to ensure a very solid connection was to solder a wire between the connection point on the bottom of the board and the "finger".

I can absolutely positively say that it does not seem to be that connection. I have the board under my magnifying glass, and I can see that the finger grips the counterpart tight. Tried everything … I also checked if the mini USB port provides voltage at all. It does, nice 5.11 Volts. Exactly where it should.

I think the board is just dead … as unlikely as this seems …

There just aren't a lot of complex components on that board to fail, but if you're sure you've got +5V on the board...it's dead, Jim. :/

I totall agree – there is just not much on it that could cause problems.

But: I just measured the ports on the usb hub board – they all get 5.10 v.

Thats funny. I do have the analog IO board too. After a year of use its starting to show the same effects. Sometimes it seems to be dead after powering up. I disconnect all usb devices and play around with the power plug. For no apparent reason it starts to come back...
Is there some design flaw at work here?

I had one that died. I got a multisystem board instead because they have overvoltage protection. At least your IO board failed and not your DE10-nano. Who's Jim? :)

Hi all, I seem to be the same issue that RiotRay described. The issues started to happen after a year of use, completely out of the blue. I'm having two very serious issues:

  • the Mister FPGA resets randomly
  • An Xbox 360 Wireless Controller that used to work perfectly, started to fail almost every time (and no, it's not the controller, because it works on my desktop computer)
By the way I'm using the power supply that came with the DE-10 Nano, but I've purchased a new one this morning that hast 3A and the issues persist.
To give more details, the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller doesn't power on most of times (you can see the red USD indicator is on). Pluggin and unpluggin the Xbox 360 controller does nothing at all (and it's also normal that the USD led doesn't power on either)
I've opened the case and blowed some dust, but doesn't seem to have made much of a difference. The Mister is warm on the bottom but not too hot either. I have a heat sink for the DE10-Nano and a fan for the Analog Board.

It seems like there's this error over and over

Code: Select all

xpad 1-1.4:1.4: xpad_irq_in - usb_submit_urb failed with result -19
 27.436452] usb 1-1.4: device descriptor read/64, error -32

That's pretty strange. It's not...

  • power, because the USB bus is detected
  • the USB cable, because the device is detected
  • the USB controller, because the device is recognized

yet xpad seems really unhappy.

Do you have a different controller that isn't an xbox pad emulation that you could test with (i.e. anything directinput)? A keyboard?
