AmigaVision 2024.04.04 Released with 543 New PAL Game Settings, Revision 2024 Demos

Unread post by limi »

We are happy to announce that the latest release of AmigaVision is available!

AmigaVision is the ultimate, open source Amiga game and demo scene setup for MiSTer and Analogue Pocket FPGAs, emulators, and real hardware.

✅ General Improvements

  • For historical reasons, AmigaVision (then known as MegaAGS) had a number of PAL games running at what is called "PAL60" — meaning, they would have the pixel aspect ratio of PAL, but would run at 60hz and 5× scale. This was before MiSTer supported 5×PAL scaling (which we implemented support for), so now that we have control of both the scaling and cropping, we can make these run at PAL settings again — so, we did.
  • This means we changed 543 games from PAL60 to PAL, and 5× scaling offsets have been added for MiSTer. If you prefer running these games in 60hz (shooters especially), you can still do that by going to OptionsForce NTSC. Please help us test these games, and report bugs if the scaling/cropping is not correct on a given game.
  • To solve issues with Super Hi-Res sprites, 28MHz is now the new default pixel clock — which means it is extra important that you update the Amiga.cfg file and MiSTer.ini settings if you are upgrading. You should always replace all files (except your Saves.hdf) and .ini settings when upgrading, and this release is no exception. Back up your existing files if you have custom settings, and re-apply them once everything is working.

🕹️ Game & Demo Highlights

  • We have included some of the best demos from last week's Revision 2024 demo party — check out Demos by Year → 2024 to see what's going on in the Amiga demo scene these days.
  • Two of the Revision 2024 demos are also 16:9 aspect ratio compatible, without stretching any pixels. To view:
    • Go to the Demos → Widescreen category.
    • Open MiSTer's OSD menu, and under Video/Audio options, select "Full Screen".
    • Start any of the demos in the Widescreen section — "Deep Meet" was this year's #1 demo at Revision, and "Paint" by Melon Design is another demo from revision that looks great in 16:9. But while you are in there, check out the other widescreen demos too! (This assumes your TV/monitor is actually 16:9 ;)
    • (And don't forget to switch it back to 40:27 after you are done with the 16:9 demos — or just re-load the core)
    • Here’s how it looks like in full 16:9 mode, please view in 1080p or 4K full screen, courtesy of the excellent @WalrusFPGA:

  • "Dune" is now running the canonical NTSC version with the taller "Sachs" NTSC pixel aspect ratio — your planets are again perfectly round!
  • "Powerglove Reloaded" isn't a completely new game, but still is not as well-known as it should be — give it a try!
  • "Ports of Call" now has configurations available for German and French.
  • "ViroCop" no longer has critical parts of the score/power display cut off.
  • Sensible Soccer 2023/2024 season version added! Play as your favorite team with correct names for the players!
  • Super Street Fighter II DX has received a descriptive label to make it obvious that it's the improved version.
  • Several classic demo scene productions are now available to run from hard disk; some highly recommended favorites:
    • Batman Rises
    • De Profundis
  • Game configurations are current with WHDLoad as of 2024-04-03.

🧩 Integrations

While not being part of the release itself, it's worth pointing out that both the excellent TapTo NFC card loader and the equally excellent Super Attract Mode support AmigaVision now. Thank you to everyone involved!

🛠️ Stay Updated & Help Us Make AmigaVision Even Better

If you find any bugs or settings that need improvements, file a ticket on the AmigaVision web site. Especially if you can help test the new 5×PAL scale and crop settings for the 543 games we just changed from PAL60 to PAL, that would be highly appreciated.

AmigaVision is an open source project, and we welcome contributions from the community. GitHub Pull Requests are very welcome!

You can follow us on Mastodon, Twitter or via RSS, and updates will be posted when new releases happen.

Enjoy the best of what the Amiga platform has to offer!

Just tried this, working great for me! I started up wizardry, created a party, walked around for a bit with no issues. I did end up removing all the default video processing settings that were applied, it makes the output all grainy and does not take up the entire screen on HDMI 1080.

Big up! :D

Thanks for the hard work and the PAL optimization.

Edit:
Are there plans to support Direct Video (DV) output with metadata (DV1) to output the native video resolution to a scaler in this case the Retrotink 4K? This would be awesome! So you putting out 240p for example and the Scaler scales to 4K. MiSTers HDMI is maxed out at 1080p.

What is Direct Video?
https://mister-devel.github.io/MkDocs_M ... how-to-use

Retrotink 4K:
https://www.retrotink.com/post/introduc ... trotink-4k

You can use your MiSTER with the RT4K directly using HDMI. As of stable firmware version 1.1.0 the RT4K will automatically engage decimation and cropping features when it detects a MiSTER core transmitting HDMI Metadata.

that is more core question then a game pack question should probley be posted on mister minimig github to become more noticed

amigavision only work on the pack and use setting already available in the core not sure they work on the core

Part of the issue here is that Amiga’s output doesn’t cleanly fit into a 240p frame, which is why we have the per-game offsets and scaling.

I would love to find a way to support this, but none of us have access to a RetroTink 4K.

Not entirely true. While we are not maintaining the core or anything like that, we do submit code for it, e.g. when we added the 5× Dynamic Crop support, that was code that Optiroc wrote that was merged into the Minimig core on the MiSTer.

LOL :D It was relevant though, as Monos was talking about a big TV. Yet, here I am using the MiSTer on my puny 9 inch iPad display exclusively.

First of all, thanks a lot for the amazing work you're doing with AmigaVision.

Is it possible to change a game's offset configuration? I just upgraded to the latest version and on my 1440p monitor, Pang has the top cropped. It would be very useful to have the possibility to change it, since it's configured on a per-game basis.

The offsets we include should only apply to 1080p (and by extension, 4K), not for any other resolution. Unless there’s a bug in the core that we are unaware of.

Is it possible to change a game's offset configuration? I just upgraded to the latest version and on my 1440p monitor, Pang has the top cropped. It would be very useful to have the possibility to change it, since it's configured on a per-game basis.

I run 1440p usually also, unless wanting to experiment with the awesome 1920x1080 widescreen demos. I just keep a couple lines commented in the ini to swap between video settings for the core depending on resolution or whether I'm recording or not. You could also make a secondary ini for 1080p that has the normal amigavision recommend settings section for 1080p, and put these in your 1440p ini file instead of the video_mode_ntsc/pal 8/9 entries that are used by default with amigavision:

video_mode_ntsc=1920,1440,60
video_mode_pal=1920,1440,50

Hopefully that works for you. Amiga looks glorious in 1920x1440 on MiSTer

Yes, apologies if I was too terse in my response. If you are using a 1440p screen, you should add the relevant default resolutions under the [Amiga] section, and replace the 1080p default PAL/NTSC settings. The 5× Dynamic Crop/Scale only applies when you use 1080p (or, by extension, 4K) output.

Jump‘n Bump and Neon World would be nice in the next release, too :)

I noticed that the normal "Alien Breed" WHDLoad version is missing. This one has proper patched CD32 controls and cheats. Only the SE seem to be there, and the Story disk.

You should be able to continue by pressing the left mouse button. A lot of intros do this.

File bugs, and we will get to fixing it in upcoming releases:

Just a little nitpick, not something missing or bugged. Parasol Kids doesn't belong into the Focused -> Arcade Ports selection. PS is an original PC-Engine game that was directly ported to the Amiga then.
