New I/O Board, AV Board

Unread post by bazza_12 »

As someone who's not technically minded (I struggle opening a carton of milk) This (below) seemed like a bit of a big deal.. I wonder if anyone can explain the differences between these updated boards and the old ones, and is it worth upgrading?.. many thanks (oh and if there's anyone out there who can help me with this bloody milk carton that would be great too..)

New I/O Board, 24bit VGA, Audio and Video DACs.

  • Official release of new I/O Board, AV Board.
  • ADC-In board update.
  • Framework update.

All cores have to be updated with new framework to support new boards. It will take some time.
I've updated both hardware and template repositories.

Effectively it's a consolidated digital and analog IO board, it has a small AV board that attaches to the other GPIO headers that enables analog output with a 24-bit DAC (better colour reproduction, less banding). It isn't available to order off-the-shelf right now and work is ongoing to update cores to fully support it.

As well as analog audio out, without the digital noise that the current analog IO board suffers from. Remove the daughter board and you can use a second memory module (and lose that analog output). Another advantage would be not having to upgrade your housing (not even when using two memory modules). The memory slot is still there, possibly that only works without the daughter board attached.

I have the old style analog board. Suppose I just go direct video for cores that could use it (primarily psx I'm thinking), is there any advantage to this vs that? My main target monitor is a 31khz pc monitor so needing to convert direct video to ypbpr for a consumer set isn't required.

can the old memory modules (i've got a 32meg and 64meg kicking around here somewhere) work in the other slot - opposite the 128meg..

Yes, they can and from what I've heard you don't even need more than 32 MB in the secondary slot.

I would really love it if they included a composite output, along with VGA.

Am I right in saying none of Jotego's cores work with the new I/O Pro AV board with a CRT? Before I upgraded my board all his cores worked on CRT but now none seemingly do (although all the main console cores seem fine).

Has there been any mention on if he is planning on supporting the new AV board?

I thought the IO pro board had a switch to go between 18/24bit?

ETA- the last time I checked none of the Jotego cores worked with the 24bit DAC enabled. I was using the analog with daughter board. It does not have a switch so I went back to the older board until the cores are updated.

The Jotego team has returned from holiday and is working on implementing the 24-bit framework.
The GitHub mister-devel cores have all been updated to officially support the brand new A/V Pro 9.2 (also includes the CAVE cores).

The new JT core updates will be released next week with a new framework compatible with A/V Pro 9.2.

The switch is just used on the resistor array boards, the A/V Pro 9.2 has a dedicated DAC chip from Analog devices.

Jotego cores now officially compatible with Analog devices' new DAC 24-bit A/V Pro 9.2 board.

For those who already have the new official MiSTer I/O board, can test and give feedback on the new cores. The sound and image are better than ever, making the new I/O the best ever. https://we.tl/t-9D84BHhxZA

I think I was confusing the UltimateMiSTer Pro with the MiSTerAddons board which is also called Pro but is switchable between 18/24bit.

Sorry for adding to any confusion of anyone else. Hopefully it was just me.

No worries at all of course. Have you tested the new JT cores on the link? We need some feedback with A/V Pro 9.2.

I just saw this reply on reddit that said they were having problems.

“Looks like no beuno. I will have to make a forum post in reply to Ricardo's.”
u/RadDadio

U/RadDadio updated as follows-
“Totally user error on my part, I did not correctly apply the new cores from Ricardo's link on the forum. All of Jotego's arcade cores are working beautifully with the new 9.2 IO board!”

Edited again
finally had time to download/install. I've only tried MvC and Super Buster Bros. (Super Pang) and they seem to work fine.

For the thick ie me, it looks just like an AV VGA board, where, or how do you get the DAC output from? The 3.55mm jack?

Thanks for the info.

Does this board allow DUAL RAM + dual video output (24bit analogue to 15khz CRT + 1440p HDMI)?

Does the new board natively support yc or does it still require an external encoder (for best quality)?

I assumed it didn’t need one but then I realized that’s because I’m using the MiSTeraddons board which isn’t the same.
