Ultima IV and V Remastered Issues

Unread post by darkwombat »

Has anyone gotten Ultima IV and Ultima V remastered (which allows music on your C64) working, or Ultima V working in C128 mode, which allows music?

Ultima V
I have tried downloading the files from here: https://csdb.dk/release/?id=227816

  • u5remastered.crt
Now, we know EasyFlash carts are useless for games like Ultima because you cant save to them yet.

  • u5remastered.d81
This hangs up and never loads. I gave it a good five minutes. Tried it with and without DolphinDOS too.

  • C128
I have tried several original Ultima V disks and can’t figure it out, as I haven't booted Ultima V through C128 since 1990!
I mount the disk, then restart the system and there an option to clear memory and stuff. Di I have to type "BOOT" and enter?

Ultima IV has its issues as well.
I did finally get Ultima IV Gold working by loading it the slow, old fashioned way (at least there is a turbo option).
But the Ultima IV remastered disks dont load. And here, there are multiple, but none of them work. D64, D71 and D81 versions of Remastered dont work.

Finally the documentation is interesting for Ultima IV Remastered:

Ultima IV Remastered saves to EasyFlash, in the top two sectors of the
cartridge. The first time after you've flashed the game you need to make sure
the save sectors are erased. In the U4 startup menu, under Manage saves,
there's an option to format flash that will do the trick. Alternatively you
can just erase the whole cartridge with easyprog before flashing.

The Manage saves menu also lets you transfer the savegame from flash to disk
and back again, for backup and for importing Ultima IV Gold saves.

To upgrade from an earlier version just flash the new .crt using EasyProg.
Savegames will not be erased, but I still recommend making a backup first just
in case.

This makes me think there may be a workaround.
Does anyone have any luck? if you have had luck, please let me know your settings or perhaps upload your C64 config file?

Thanks!

both .d81 versions for IV as well V seem to load just fine on the c64 core using dolphin dos , i dont know what is meant by slow b/c im SO old i remember pressing play on tape and personally i like the accurate simulation of loading times

i havent started a game b/c there stuff and life and groceries and other stuff and life and stuff and i still havent finished ultima 1 on the apple 2 but

  • its a fact the computer cores on the mister are undercooked, however, since everyone gives patreon money for arcade cores this simply makes sense, if one maecenas would stand up and provide enough so someone could pay a team half the size of jotego there would be some advancement . The self-proclaimed sceners seem to have no honour in their machines (or else they are like us and too stupid to write cores    )

  • the c64 core doesnt do easyflash i/o so that would be an exercise in futility, it would be nice if someone got tired enough and simply ported VICE-mister or something as-a-core and get it over with, it wouldnt be real-real but at least we would have everything in one place.

so, before anyone accuses me of incoherent rambling : both (scene cdsb-)versions load fine when i use the .d81 version , you cant just type "load" as you would with dolphin dos, you have to actually do the retro thing and load "*",8,1 and then RUN or load "$",8 and LIST first but the V version has a dirrectory listing the size of a five star restaurant menu so you'll have to runstop that (press escape)

if i i missed the point please clarify but i didnt see anything not working really (tho i haven ran it past the menu and started the actual games) maybe you didnt wait long enough. A lot of stuff wont work with fastloaders, thats the case on "real hardware" too when using kungfu-flash / sd2iec drives (i would know b/c i still have an original kernal v3 / 6581 machine but with a kungfu and sd2 drive b/c floppies are hard and take space (and money)

... i would be happy to test it if you have another q but c128 is not c64 so maybe its not made for that, the c64 (as said, works fine with the .d81 images) overhere so it probably should overthere since a mister is a mister

have a nice day then i hope this was of any help

patience is a human virtue, especially in true emulation of 8 bit machines from the 1980s (i often get the idea the ST(e) core hangs too but actually its still loading most of the time) and thats already 16bit ... would be awfully nice to have a drive-sound like you have in vice b/c the led on the mister board isnt always a clear indicator of "loading"-on-the-core, it just means sd-access i think (not sure) i might as well be a lamer since im not really knowledgeable about the underthehood stuff

... there ... im probably running late to i should run

try again, wait longer lol , it certainly doesnt take ten minutes
maybe 1 or between 1 and 2 somewhere on the .d81 versions

No, it's definitely an opinion 8-)

@darkwombat: using u5remastered.d81 and JiffyDos I managed to create a character, play for a minute, save and succesfuly restore. I'd post my cfg but there's nothing in it - I use default settings. Check everything again - OSD settings and maybe reinstall your core and assorted loader files from github.

fine , i'll settle for "debatable" lol ...

but agree :: i had quirks with msx several times, deleting the core-file from the sd card (ftp or whatever just remove it and slot it) and running update all fixed that every time

I haven't tried Ultima IV but I have played some Ultima V Remastered on the C128 core using the D81 image and it works, music and all.
I never got a prompt to Clear Memory or anything of the sort after attaching the D81 image and resetting the C128 core...just the Loading and then black screen for a couple of minutes (definitely not 10 min though) and eventually you starting seeing the animated logo...
If that's not the behavior you are getting (using the C128 core along with the D81 image), post your core settings. Most important is the Video Out and 40/80 Display settings under Audio/Video and then the settings under Hardware.

Just tried right now.
Almost everything is default.
DolphinDOS
loaded ultimaVresmastered.d81
Hit F3 then F5 to load
Waited........5 minutes.....nothing
it just says "SEARCHING FOR *
Gave up after 7 minutes.
I even tried this by deleting my C64 config file.
Next I tried loading it again and typed: load "*",8,1
Got ths:
SEARCHING FOR *
Gave up after 8 minutes

And how the heck did you do this?

Did you go to C64 mode? If so, how?
I tried using Load "*",8,1 and I get a long running break.
You cant do that in C128.

No don't go in C64 mode.
When you first load up the core, it should be in C128 mode.
Press F12 to open the OSD, mount the Disk in Drive #8
Then either press CTRL+ALT+ALT or from OSD tell it to RESET.

what he said !
however, i ran them both from the .d81 files on the c64 core using dolphindos and using load "*",8,1 and then "run" did work ... its hard to believe there's a difference between hardware on a mister unless you got some custom chips onthere so maybe removing and reinstalling the core would do it.

What matters is you got it working ofcourse, game on !

Both the C64 and the C128 should be able to load the D81 images as long as you provide the appropriate 1581 rom files for the C64 (the C128 has it included with update_all).
The only difference of course, at least with the Ultima V, is that on the C128 core, if you boot it up from C128 mode, it will enable the music track.

Yes I did the old fashioned Load way and it worked buit not with DOLPHINDOS. Odd. Well, at least it works.

Got it all working but cant get it to work using DOLPHINDOS.
It is odd that there is no music in the C64 version.
The whole point of Ultima V remastered was it actually got music to work on a C64 not needing a C128. Try it on a C64 emulator, music works.
Its fine though at least it works on the C128 core.
