MiSTer FPGA Might Be the Best Piece of Hardware I've Ever Owned

Unread post by darkwombat »

This is a pretty long post but I hope that anyone on the fence or veterans alike will read and appreciate it.

Find exactly what BOTHERS you and do the thing that prevents that.
Don't find what you like; find what you dislike and remove that from the equation.
For me its input lag..

I tried, too; I did. Just two years ago I had an Atari 2600 with AV mod, an Atari 800 with a multicart, and a Commodore 64 with the Ultimate 64 board in it. All hooked up to a Commodore 1084 monitor and I had a switch system to switch between them. While it was nice, it was costly, and I could tell the Atari 800 was on its last legs, let alone the CRT, which my sons constantly complained about the high-pitched noise (they eventually lose that hearing frequency in their early 20's, I'm told). I'm 54 years old, my eyesight isn’t what it used to be, and it is not talked about much, but as good as those Commodore monitors are, they are only 13", just too small. There's no way I was gonna spend some more cash and lug in a nice Trinitron, which takes up MORE space. The big issue was I am VERY sensitive to input lag. Plus, all of these 40-year-old parts could fail at any moment; I don’t solder; it’s just not my thing and CRTs take up too much space in my area and as we approach 40 years with them I worry about safety too.

So, for years, I waited. How can I get these systems I love to produce near-zero input lag in my HDMI monitor?

Retrotink
Pretty nice, something felt off about it. The picture was never as crisp as I liked it, and I still had these large keyboards I had to shift around every time I wanted to play. Plus, I am still using 40-year-old hardware.

Retroarch
Filled in some gaps for a while. However some computer emulators didn't support the "read-ahead" function, so the lag was there. And even though I eventually figured it out, I absolutely hate how brutal the UI is.

Atari 2600+ and the Atari 400 mini
So the Atari 2600+ came out last year, and although it is exciting, it is just a ROM dumper that requires actual old cartridges. I still, to this day, don't GET the product. I tried it and was not happy and felt it was not as accurate as the Stella 2600 emulator because with the emulator, you are using a powerful CPU, not this new fad (2600+ and the horrible 400mini, and C64mini), which are powered by phone CPUs from 8 years ago. You're supposed to take your 40-year-old cartridges filled with corrosion and place them into this new unit. But it just dumps the rom! You can't even use a multi-cart with it. That did not last for me more than an hour. With all the Atari stuff and ways to buy it through various collections and rom dumper systems, somewhere deep inside of me, there is an article I would like to write called "Atari is trying to get you to buy Asteroids 5 times in your life".

Mister FPGA Solution
A month ago, I purchased a Mister FPGA, cased and completely set up and ready to go on eBay for $500. It was a tough sell, and took me years to finally take the chance. It’s the best retro purchase I’ve ever made, and maybe the best hardware purchase ever (outside of my 6800XT purchase last year, which was on sale AND included Starfield deluxe for free!

For $500, I got an all-in-one device, and for that kind of accuracy with a CRT for all the systems I wanted, it would cost me easily over $1,000.
The scan-line and shadow mask choices are amazing, the sound is crisp, and after extensive testing with the corresponding emulators, I can easily see the difference and can't go back. I get CRT-like response time on my nice 1ms 2k HDMI monitor for everything I want (Atari 8-bit, 2600, 5200, 7800, C64, Arcade, NES, SNES, Genesis, Neo Geo, etc, etc)

I bought a retro-style keyboard (with colors that match Commodore and Atari computers) and USB switch to easily switch between my main system and the Mister, see below. Nice mechanical clicking, backlit and sits on my lap while I'm in a recliner.
Add the VCS classic joystick (pictured below) and it is total gaming bliss.

Messing around with the cores is so much fun. Plus, I am finally now an Amiga user! The DOS cores have been great, and I love the Arcade cores as well. I am also discovering NEO GEO and purchased that new 8bitdo joystick, which I love for some good NEO GEO fun, and it's perfect for arcade games.

Atari 800 and Commodore 64 feel like I am using the exact hardware. The sound is also underrated, and while it is not 100% with the original, the sound is miles better than an emulator. The Stella 2600 is pretty great, so there isn’t much room for improvement on the Atari 2600 side but it's still awesome. I wish I could get my Atari VCS controller (pictured below) spinner to work right on paddle games.

People claim that the FPGA crowd is very egotistical, and maybe there is some of that in my post. But I am happy, and finally found what I was looking for, and hope that anyone who has been lost for several years looking for a solution will find this post and appreciate my quest completion..lol

In closing...
I argue that some of the anti-FPGA crowd is almost worse. They get really upset and "don't want to hear about it". Now, I'm not here to rip CRT monitors because I think they are amazing. There is an overlap between the original console owners who use a CRT and the Mister FPGA crowd. There are overlaps all over the place, and technically the Mister is emulation, hardware emulation.

But the big overlap is we all love these games and want to play them as accurately as possible, and I feel that Mister 100% achieves that.

The MiSTer is the perfect balance between new and old. It's the best solution to play old games for those of us who are sensitive to input lag.

There are insufferable people in every large group. I personally think that there are far more of them in the software emulation circles since the barrier to entry there is almost nothing and therefore there are more people in that group.

Also, if you never experienced these old games on original hardware, then you have no muscle memory that software emulation (largely) isn't going to match. I feel like like a lot of the people who "don't want to hear" about FPGA emulation simply aren't old enough to have been around when those games were current. For them, software emulation probably feels fine.

I'm thankful all the time that the MiSTer is a thing!

I think miSTer ticks too many boxes for me.

1- Easy setup
2- Boots instantly
3- Display options: can use a crt tv, a crt monitor or a modern hdmi display, even simultaneously.
4- SNAC: Can use original controllers and Lightgun support
5- Can connect to Jamma cabinet
6- Lag is not an issue (input and display)
7- Has cores for most important consoles up to 5th gen

If there is an alternative that can do everything I haven´t found one yet. Its main downside is cost, but as clones are arriving it seems many more people will be able to enjoy one and really appreciate it. Most people I have heard criticizing the project is because of cost.

For me it's all about that simple UI. I agree with your comments on Retroarch. It's just a jumble of menus that I just get lost in. I could never be bothered with it. I did question my purchase of Mister simply because I don't notice input lag - perhaps it is my slow reaction times these days anyway. However, after trying software emulation, I think the Mister is worth its price just for the simplicity of it. The simple UI, the simple setup, etc.

At my age I just want a simple life and the Mister gives me that.

Felt like this for 5 years now. It's truly the gift that keeps on giving. Thanks to Sorg and all of our wonderful devs and hardware providers, we are the most spoiled bunch of retro gamers on earth. Even if it can come across as off-putting to some folks when they hear the way MiSTer is talked about by the people who have experienced it, when you actually use one that all fades away and you just enjoy it. Really is the best hardware I've ever had for gaming in a bang-for-the-buck and usability perspective. Even when a more powerful successor comes around it won't diminish the value of what this can do in the slightest.

What is funny is that I am such a classic gamer (C64, Atari stuff, etc) that I am never gonna need something new and improved. I dont need N64 or Gamecube FPGA.

Its a useless piece of HW. Every time I put a slice of bread on it, it fails to toast it. Worst device ever.

What I like most about the Mister is that it's so easy to play on a CRT with it, you just need to change like 2 lines on the config file and that's it, you don't need to mess with modelines and come up with a different one for each core. Not only that but with the help of inexpensive adapters you can use any kind of analog output mode, from RF up to RGB. It's a really incredible machine.

I still love emulators and use them, but Mister has been the main way I play retro games since I bought it in december 2022.

I've know FPGA world on about january 2015 with Mist FPGA and since then, i've discovered this new wonderfull world.
ATM i've 3 Misters (on 3 different setups), a Sidi128, a Sidi, a Mist, 3 Misticas, a N-GO, a Spectrum Next original and i love all them
On next months i will receive Mega65 too.
All these devices are based on FPGA (like Ultimate2+ on real C64).
I LOVE FPGAs

At this point, it's worth waiting for Taki Udon's handheld MiSTer project. The Pocket certainly has a lot of nice things about it, but it's limited in capabilities compared to the MiSTer.

I thought I read the Taki handheld is going to resemble a GBA?

I has a you tube
Analog IO
USB board
VGA > Component
HDMI > FPM

Does Taki Udon post his stuff to RetroCastle? Following the Twitter updates it's great seeing all the improvements but no word of where and when to buy is a bit frustrating

As of time of writing there is no concrete release date, availability etc. Just speculated release window and pricing.

Taki's probably best monitored on Twitter or YouTube.

I think you are confusing input lag with response time.

Am I the only one who had the MiSTer trigger a retro-collecting marathon, at least on the affordable stuff? I'm slowing down now, but a couple of years ago, I bought way too much stuff for my own sake! Especially on the PC and PS1 side of things... I also got 4 CRTs, and I'm sure I wouldn't have thought about getting them if it wasn't for the MiSTer in the first place. :D

Whatever the correct term is, it FEELS like I'm playing on a CRT.
Obviously, and it goes without saying, I was talking about input lag.

With input lag almost identical to a CRT on something way bigger than my old 13" Commodore Monitor, it's pure bliss for me. Just because I don't agree with you doesn’t mean I am in denial.

Fully Agree. For people that can't have a CRT (eg. the room, the wife), being able to use the Mister onto any flat panel Monitor, TV or projector are just fantastic options.
eg. , I got a couple of 15-20 years old used 20" 1600x1200 4:3 for about 15-20€ each and my Mister looks great on those.
I also enjoy playing with filters for my favorite cores.
Can't see any input lag, but i may not be sensitive to it.

I also plan to hook my upcoming second Mister to my main TV 55" 1080P SONY from 2007 so to play from the couch ....
