Free new games for your retro MiSTer cores

Unread post by akeley »

One of the most fun things about MiSTer is how easy it's to be able to nearly instantly try new software for assorted retro machines. Just download it and drag and drop to MiSTer, and presto! There are heaps of free homebrew games/demos/utilities released all the time and many of them are at least amusing and worth having a look, while some are as good (and sometimes better) as the commercial ones.

Here are a few that have caught my eye recently.

Apparently there is a "Wordle" craze going on out there and after reading about these I got hooked myself...
C64: Wordz & Turdle (no $hit)
ZX Spectrum: ZXwordle
BBC Micro: Wordle
I think there are even more ports...

Some "normal" games:

ZX Spectrum - the author of the magnificent Wudang has just released another game: Loxley. The kicker is that while they are as good as machine code games (especially Wudang), they were actually written in ZX Basic (@@)
Also two staggeringly good freebies that you can't miss, one from 2021: Travel Through Time Vol.1: Northern Lights & 2020: Wonderful Dizzy

Atari 8-bit - Final Assault: an impressive 3D FPS. Also, Prince Of Persia got ported in 2021, needs 128Kb (no problem for us)

C64 - Two very impressive ports: Puzzle Bobble & Scramble Infinity And, yes, Sonic, but I'm sure everyone and their grandma heard about that one already.

MSX - Westen House cool isometric adventure released a few months ago

Amiga - it's been all a bit quiet since that crazy Dread demo and Tinyus/Gradius port's recent beta, hopefully this year will have something interesting in store.

Atari ST - there was a Metal Slug port/remix released some time ago for STE, but I did not manage to get it running yet. How to drag it on a HDD image?

These are all for microcomputers, my main area of interest, but I'm sure some of the older consoles get freebies too. If you hear of any interesting free releases, or remeber some unmissable ones, post away! (though I guess quality commercial ones might deserve a shout too).

(Self promotion) AO486 PC Core -- 100 Games in the Shareware Pack, all free and you don't need a memory stick for the MiSTer to use it... https://github.com/flynnsbit/DOS_Sharew ... ag/v0.1.20

I guess I should add the OG Shareware version of Wordle to the pack https://dosgames.com/game/wordle/

Masteries has just released his Metal Slug remix for Genesis (previously only on Atari STe). It's a proper homebrew - rough around the edges with some wild gameplay, definitely worth checking out.

That's pretty great for homebrew!

"Millie and Molly" is now free on itch.io. Worth donating anyway, since it's a really great puzzle game, one of the better C64 homebrew productions from the last few years.

Another freebie for Commodore machines (expaned C16, Plus/4 & C64). "Lykia - The Lost Island" is a large adventure with stunning gfx/sfx. I'm not usually a fan of the Commie colour palette but these guys really get the best out of it. It's also nice to see more and more games different than usual STG/platformer template to start appearing again.

Necroing this thread because everybody should check Metro Siege Amiga demo. It's an incredible achievement, easily on par with the old AAA action games - even console ones.
