Hi there,
Has someone got L and R buttons on the RetroBit V2 Saturn pad to be mapped correctly on the Saturn core?
Only ZL and ZR seem to work, but not normal L and R.
They are recognized as individual buttons on the MiSTer main menu, apparently.

L&R doubles as C and Z buttons on the Saturn pro. So you cannot map them as regular L&R buttons or you will lose C and Z. You need to use ZL and ZR for that.
Thanks, yes, I can confirm L&R double as C and Z. What a disaster...
Is there a way to avoid that? I mean: I'd rather prefer to use L&R instead of ZL&ZR. What were they thinking...?
No, same on real Saturn and the same for me on the MiSTer.

maybe because the saturn does not have 4 top buttons. but they should be available in switch mode.

On WIndows and the Switch you have 12 buttons with this controller.

I may be being a bit obtuse here, but... should I put the thing into SWITCH mode then and I will then be able to use normal L&R independently?
I did not try it, but according to the manual only the Saturn doubles the buttons:
https://manuals.plus/retro-bit/rb-sga-0 ... ler-manual
In any case you should update the firmware of both the controller and the dongle, I remember that the initial firmware had some nasty bugs.
Then, sorry but I can't make any sense out of this: What's the logic behind having Z and C doubled with R1 L1?
Why? It's absurd. Saturn has independent Z and C and normal L and R.
it's for if you want to play 4 face buttons and 4 top buttons. you can also use L2 and R2 with 6 face buttons.
I see. But being a Saturn pad, shouldn't it have normal L&R behave as such with the 6 face buttons, since that's what the Saturn did?

The pad has 4 shoulder buttons. 2 of them work as L and R. You can use the pad as a normal Saturn pad. The 2 extra buttons are if you want to use the pad on Windows or the Switch. Retrobit decided to offer Saturn users an extra functionality by mapping two of the face buttons to the additional 2 shoulder buttons.
I would have preferred analog triggers as this would have made the pad 100% 3D Control Pad compatible but as the buttons are digital I think this is better than to make the buttons non working on the Saturn.

No, because normal L&R are unusable as Saturn L&R, are they? I wouldn't call it a normal Saturn pad.
I am very thankful for your explanation, even so

This is in the labeling of the buttons only and not the in function. Must confess I never paid attention to this and I think nobody who actually held the controller in their hands would have.
The lower buttons are labeled as L2 and R2 but when you take the controller your index fingers lay on them and not on the buttons labeled L and R. This is because L2 and R2 are much bigger the L and R and they also have a outside curve at the bottom that helps to hold your fingers in place. Unless a standard 4 shoulder button pad I don't imagine anyone trying to lay the index fingers on L and R and the ring fingers on L2 and R2 (like on a Playstation pad) this feels rather unconfortable.
You are right the labeling of the buttons is off in this case but from a usability point of view their are dedicated buttons for L and R that are clearly defined and comfortable.

I get your point, yes...
My hands must be strange, I tend to push normal L&R when playing Panzer Dragoon, as if my muscle memory from playing the game on the original Saturn would make them more... adequate.

I don't think your hands are strange, maybe it was just a wrong assumption from me because I found the lower buttons super comforable.
