Hi guys, I'm curious what the current state of the 0mhz collection is. Should I switch from the previous DOS top300 collection? does everything work as well? is the MT-32 pi at least as well supported? Thank you.

0mhz goal is to "consolize" the DOS gaming experience for those who did not play DOS games growing up. Just select the game and play. Some of the VHD's have MT32, but not all.

I get a black screen for every game I tried, lol I even opened the OSD menu and manually inserted VHD files into all IDEs, but nothing seems to work

Thats because you deleted the bios files in games/ao486 or never had them. I screwed screwed this up

I happened to notice that if you have a game that expects the CD drive to be drive D, you can't have a hard disk image mounted on IDE 0-1, because then the CD drive won't be D anymore. I had previously saved my AO486 core settings so that I always had some disk in IDE 0-1. Then when I tried to boot up for example 7th Guest from the 0MHz collection, I always got 'Please Insert Disc One' (and I do have the typo fixed MGL). The MGL file of 7th Guest correctly sets up the images that it needs, but is it possible to also unmount the images from the other drives to always have a working configuration?

This is an amazing project. Especially being able to launch games directly from the MiSTer menu is so convenient!

May I request games?

  • CD-MAN (best Pac Man clone I've ever played)

Despite its german name, the latter is an amazing and unique little game with the goal of pushing opponents off the map. You definitely should give it a try. :)

Man I really wish such a project would exist for Win 3.x where we could launch those from the MiSTer menu too and they'd chainload DOS>Windows>Game and use runexit.exe to close out back to the main menu as soon as the game window is being closed.

Most (of course, not all) games that run under Windows would require more powerful hardware than the ao486 core can supply. But you can give it a try if you have a specific game in mind — it’s just a pre-configured HDF image and a simple MGL file for the MiSTer menu.

The general policy on adding new games is covered here:

Really? Since I'm talking about W3.x (and not W95 or above) I thought most popular games would run just fine, at least that's what I saw in a few YouTube videos like this one from our favorite news channel:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kJvjf7Q-do

I mean games like those from the Microsoft Entertainment Packs and alike.

Thanks for the tips, I'll look into that when I have spare time. Was just surprised that there isn't such a project yet like 0MHz DOS Collection or AmigaVision for W3.x games. Most of them shouldn't be too taxing.

Yes, those will definitely run.

Only one way to fix it: Start that project! 😄

Maybe this is what is going to happen. ;)

Currently, installing 0MHz-DOS overwrites a user's own AO486 config, which can be very frustrating if the user already configured their own hard disk files and configs.

I have a suggestion for the collection: Why not use a setname that is different from AO486? For example "0MHz-DOS"?

If each .mgl file specifies the setname 0MHz-DOS, there are multiple benefits:

  • The collection would reside in the folder "/games/0MHz-DOS" instead of "/games/AO486", so it wouldn't be cluttering up people's existing DOS files and configuration.
  • The bundled config file would be called 0MHz-DOS.cfg instead of AO486.cfg and users wouldn't overwrite their own configuration files anymore
  • The 0MHz-DOS configuration could be edited independent of the regular AO486 config.

No issues here but, pay attention to the ao486.cfg file that might have been overwritten with the MT-32 disabled. I always keep mine, and just install the games.

I don't think any Doom ever directly supported MT-32 (properly)...they were very much intended for General MIDI.

Hi Everyone!

So I'm going to preface this post with the fact that I've just started exploring MiSTer as I received Taki's Retro Remake clone just yesterday. So still very new to the experience and the eco system. That said I've got everything up and running and have been playing through few great games from my youth from the 0MHz collection, so a HUGE thank you there!

That said, I've run into a small issue - I just fired up King's Quest V (from the 0MHz collection), and when I try and save my game, the save screen has the following:

"This directory/disk can hold no more saved games. You must replace one of your saved games or use Change Directory to save on a different directory/disk"

As I'm still new to MiSTer, I'm not entirely sure where to start troubleshooting this and was wondering if anyone else came across this issue? It's the first game I've come across that had this issue.

EDIT/UPDATE - SOLUTION!

So I was doing some more digging and seemed that others had come across a similar issue as discussed in this thread over at Vogons:https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=24042

In turn, the solution was to simply edit RUNGAME.BAT in the KQ5 directory making the following change to the last line:

FROM:

Code: Select all

SIERRA.EXE

TO:

Code: Select all

SIERRA.EXE C:\KQ5\RESOURCE.CFG

Seems to be a bug that only affects KQ5, but making that quick change fixed the save game issue! Hope this helps someone else.

Thanks!

Great project!!

Run the usual version. Exit the game, run setup and simply change music device to mt-32 or general midi (can't remember which one is present there). Save and restart the game. You must do that just once.

thanks for the idea to start doom (ultimate ) and change the music output
You have to exit the game and run
fdsetup.exe and choose music soundcard and change music output to general midi
but it will be nice to have a dedicated version starts it directy in roland sc55 mode and sets the mt32pi to the right mode
