Is there a MiSTer buyers guide?

Unread post by nrnoble »

As my first FPGA, I am looking for a assembled MiSTer (ie https://misteraddons.com/products/miste ... 5710678149), but I still want to have a good understanding of what to buy to avoid finding out that I bought the wrong parts, or should have bought additional hardware. I am likely to buy a fully assembled MiSTer simply to avoid trouble shooting assembly and config problems with little FPGA knowledge. I have the skills\experience to work through it, but rather skip that part of the process with my first FPGA.

NOTE: I do have a FPGA. Earlier this year I bought a dedicated Tempest FPGA for my Atari Tempest cabinet, and it works perfectly. After adding the rom images, it took less than 5 minutes to install the hardware. Turned it on and it just worked as if I had just replaced the original PCB board.

I'm biased from owning one, but I can highly recomnend the Mister Multisystem. Pretty plug and play. The board has everything you need with well designed I/O. 'Building' it is dead simple. Buy the MMS board, plop down a DE-10 onto the header pins and youre done! Looks way better than 'the stack', especially when cables are connected.

Just something to consider!

We will have a new batch of MMS ready in few days.

Just start with the wiki at https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Wiki_MiSTer/wiki and go on from there. It explains the must have things and the optional ones.

Video Game Esoterica did a pretty good review of several DE-10 Nano clone boards recently:

Did a dual RAM build guide recently:

And a MiSTer build guide:

He's also covered the Taki Udon clone, well as much as can be covered with any kind of journalistic integrity:

It would be interesting to know which, if any of the clone boards would work. I think headers on the QMtech are different (annoying) but maybe the Taki Udon solution will 'just work'.

It would be appreciated if you could test when the time comes. I am certain clone board owners will be trying to find 'full build' solutions like the MMS.
