256 color in windows 95
Hello all,
I've successfully installed windows 95 on the mister ao486 core.
However, I'm limited to 16 colors. Whenever I try to set 256 colors (or higher) I get the error message:
"There is a problem with your display settings. The adapter type is correct or the current settings do not work with your hardware"
Has anyone else encountered this issue? Is this some sort of hardware limitation within the core? I feel that I've seen people getting 256 colors working on the ao486 core before.
Thanks

Re: 256 color in windows 95
Have you installed the display driver, misterfb.inf, from the repo: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/ao486_M ... leases/drv ?

Re: 256 color in windows 95
First, thank you very much for taking the time to help me.
I copied all 5 files from https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/ao486_M ... leases/drv onto my vhd. I installed the driver misterfb.drv but I still have the problem.
To clarify, this is how I installed it: I put all five files on my vhd in a folder called "drv". Then I booted up windows 95, right-clicked "properties" -> clicked "settings" tab -> "advanced properties" -> "change" -> went to C:/drv and installed the driver there.
I am a little more optimistic now as it actually lists the display adapter as "MiSTer ET4000+", which it didn't do before, however I still am unable to choose anything besides 16 colors.
Edit: I've figured it out. I had to update boot0.rom and boot1.com. A couple months ago I tried getting this set up and gave up; it was only recently I tried again and had more luck. Thanks for the help!

Re: 256 color in windows 95
You need to ensure the newest boot rom files are in your AO486 folder and then in Windows 95 you need to find the driver called ET4000. The MiSTer driver does not work, or at least I have not heard of anyone who got it fully working. So use the driver that comes with Windows 95 instead.
The MiSTer specific driver is for the open source bios that is in one of the alternative boot rom files. It does not seem to work very well though.

Same here, the misterfb driver is working very well for me in windows along with the boot0 and 1 rom files from the repo.
Re: 256 color in windows 95
How does one actually load the drivers in for this on Win95? I've tried the Device Wizard with no luck.
Tried to load it from a floppy disk and getting the error "Device not accessable" for drive A:

This might not be 100%, going from memory.
Click the Start button and go to Control Panel, then System.
Go to the Device Manager tab
Expand the Display Devices and select the current one (probably VGA?)
Click Properties.
Got to the driver tab
Click Change Driver
Click Show All Devices
Click Have Disk
Select the location of the downloaded driver and click OK
Restart Windows

This is what I've tried already. I have the drivers from the ao486 repo in a folder on my vhd, but when I point to it in the Driver Device Wizard, it tells me the selected location does not contain an updated driver for my device.SuperBabyHix wrote: ↑Wed Sep 02, 2020 6:57 pmThis might not be 100%, going from memory.

You've probably got a old boot1.rom (and old boot0.rom) Replace them with the ones in https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/ao486_M ... eases/bios
