New Analog 9.2 I/O board - Composite color artifacting working?

Unread post by thorr »

Has anyone tried the MikeS composite adapter with the new I/O board and confirmed whether it outputs exactly like the old I/O board did? I don't have the old I/O board for reference, and when I put the Apple II core in B&W mode, it is supposed to display in color on a composite monitor, but it doesn't for me. It is barely in color on my TV, and still black and white on my composite monitor. Or does anyone have the old I/O board and can confirm that putting the Apple II core into B&W mode that it shows up in full color on their composite TV?

Thanks!

Doesn't one of the DE-10 dip-switches set it to 18-bit color mode? Maybe you could try that to see if that makes any difference. If so, the YC logic might have to be updated for 24-bit output.

Thanks. I can try that and see what happens. It has different DAC's on the board, so I am not sure it will make any difference, but it might. I am also not sure if the DAC's will work well when being fed 18-bit color and they are expecting 24-bit, but probably they will at least sort of work.

Yeah, not sure if the board is 'backwards compatible' with 18-bit color, but it seems like a relatively simple thing to try to possibly gather some more information.

I am confused about composite output. When I run any other core besides Apple II, I don't see any options to enable YC mode, and everything is in color. When I run Apple II, Color mode works in color, but BW mode is in Black and White. Supposedly BW mode is supposed to be in color if you have a composite monitor because it uses artifacting.

In any core, how do I know if I am using Y/C mode or not? The color seems to look great on everything, except Apple II BW mode. Does anyone have the old analog board with the YC adapter that can try the Apple II core in BW mode and tell me if it is in color or black and white?

As far as my DE10-nano switches go, I haven't switched them yet, but the instructions say that the left switch needs to be up for "most of the functionality to work" so I am afraid to switch it. I think it is for the high quality audio.

YC output has been included in the MiSTer framework a while ago, you need to change the VGA mode in mister.ini to svideo or cvbs. https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Main_Mi ... MiSTer.ini

Apparently it is the MiSTer Addons board has a switch to toggle between 18-bit and 24-bit video, so the idea with DE-10 dip switches might indeed not work. I couldn't find any concrete information about what those do exactly.

Yes, that is what I did. However I am confused because in the Apple IIe core thread it was mentioned that BW mode should show up in color, but it doesn't for me. Other than the Apple IIe core in BW mode, everything including the Apple IIe core in color mode is working and looks good in color.

I am hoping to get definitive clarification at this point if the Apple IIe BW mode works in color via Composite for anyone with the older I/O board. If it is BW for everyone, then I think the case is closed.

Thanks!

I wonder if the luma trap in the YC adapter is preventing color from being generated by the grayscale image.
