Analogue 3D is available to preorder

Unread post by seastalker »

N64 in 4k:

That 8bitdo controller looks sweet! The 3d... I think I will sit this one out. I'm fine with my OG 64, and especially with the MiSTer core.

Hope others get to enjoy this though.

It bothers the hell out of me that they claim "100% compatibility because #FPGA!" on every single product release, then the bug and incompatibility reports roll in.

That being said, good that we're getting closer on the whole day by day to finally having good fidelity N64 systems. Miles away from UltraHLE. =)

That price is incredible for the hardware this thing is packing!

How on earth are they managing to sell a device for $250 that is packing a 220k LE Intel Cyclone 10GX!? That’s almost double the size of the Cyclone V in the DE-10 Nano! :o

I was thinking the same. IF the 'spiritualized' cores magically show up one day, I might bite. A huge cost savings from a Retrotink 4K for specific case uses. I hope to get a Retrotink 4K one day for all the other features though.

Not available to pre order until the 21st btw. I think I'm good with the Mister too tbh. If It were more open, then yeah, that becomes a different proposition!

So 200 quid, and you can play N64 games with a high compatibility, I say high, because chuck a scene demo at it, and it'll fall over, and if anything doesn't work, there's nothing nobody can do as it's closed source (I think).
N64 off ebay 30 quid, + ED64 for 50 quid, totally 100% compatibility
I'd be interested if it gets jailbreaked, and other cores could be created, 220k LE is a canny FPGA!

A quick glance at LCSC looking for that FPGA tells me the price drops quite fast to around $72 to $86 per unit once you order 200+ and it even drops a little more at 500 and 1000 units, so anyone able to create a working board could potentially get one out for around $200 give or take and depending on how much time needed to design and prototype the board?

Interestingly, it is now at the hour past point of pre-orders and it is not sold out. I passed on it and am wondering if the market for Analogue is cooling down due to other options now.

personally i would've liked that type of system more in a MiSTer kind of flavour, i can imagine why they wouldn't do it, but nonetheless.

I hope people are getting tired of the FOMO marketing analogue seems to espouse

The options for N64 aren't that great. There' just less demand than the pocket. Which makes sense when you look at how many gameboys sold versus N64s. And the openfpga stuff gives the pocket value even beyond that.

White 3Ds are apparently sold out though. And I assume most people are buying black.

hm, do i -want- n64 rendered at 4k?
has retro gaming become the new resolution/rendition chase ala the home movie industry,

VHS>Laserdisc>DVHS>DVD>Superbit DVD>HD-DVD>Bluray>UltraHD

A superfam, or someone who never had one, i get it. I think the money is better put elsewhere to make the whole system(s) better. RT4k?

That said $250 aint all bad!
wait wait wait no trident controller design????????? ooookay

Theoretically, 4K allows for better use of shaders / upscaling to represent the "CRT look". How it works in practice remains to be seen, although their (as per usual) borderline religious marketing pronouncements about "the unmistakable essence of a CRT." and "true CRT reference quality" made me chuckle.

CRT SCR$ Project - building a collection of high-quality photos of CRT displays
CRT ART Books - retro-gaming books with authentic CRT photos

It’s not. It’s rendered at the native resolution (just like MiSTer), then they apply filters on top of that to simulate a CRT. Those filters are reportedly done in 4K.

Emulation is currently the way to go if you actually want things rendered in 4K with upgraded texture packs etc.

I would have been interested if it has Open FPGA as it would be a short of 4K MiSTer. I don't care for N64.... So meh

No, it will cost you much more in the UK—more like £300-£320. There’s the shipping fee (around £45-£50), custom charges and VAT (£40-£45), plus the courier company handling fee (£10-£15).

It’s the same with all Analogue products bought from the UK.
