Help Finding Platform For Arcade Stick, Keyboard, Etc

Unread post by The Egg »

Hey all. I have a generalized retro-gaming issue. I recently found the perfect TV stand for my CRT, but can't figure out a good way to use my arcade stick, keyboard, and joystick (not all at the same time of course) while freely sitting back in a chair. I'm limited for space and can't do a full desk or table, so it would need to be something which can be moved/stored when not in use.

In addition, whatever platform would need to be height-adjustable and somehow not interfere with my legs. I envision something resembling a TV tray (for eating on the couch), but all the TV trays I see are much too flimsy for an 8-pound arcade stick under use. I feel like this must be something most retro gamers deal with in some form (especially any using arcade sticks without a cabinet), and that I'm somehow whiffing on an easy solution. Thoughts?

After doing some more research, I think what I want is either a small height-adjustable table with no crossing supports (to go up and over my lap), or a height adjustable table/platform with only a single center post to go between my knees

in the as of yet still united states we call it a 'coffee table'

:)

i know i know its not ideal.

maybe an interesting mounting of a swinging monitor arm with a horizontal platform attached instead of a monitor?

or some sort of flip up/hinged table you sometimes see in schools?

Those angle-adjustable tabletops are cool, but the ones I’ve seen are expensive and a bit elaborate. Coffee tables are much too low (my table in the living room is 18” high), which would mean I’m leaning forward for hours at a time. I’ve been having back issues lately, and that would be no good.

I’ve been using a cheap X-frame piano bench turned sideways temporarily. It’s mostly functional but not ideal. Needs a little more height, and the padding would have to go
