Taki's Handheld MiSTer Device

I've heard that Taki Udon is planning to release a DE10 Nano clone based MiSTer handheld, but are there any specifics? Eg size, controls, ETA, anything else of interest?

Details are very scarce, everything released publicly is on Taki's X account.

What we know right now:

• It is codenamed the "Super R2"

• It will probably have a 4:3 AMOLED screen

• No concrete release schedule

• Two "teaser" images have been released, presumably WIP CAD files

Thanks for the info. I'm kind of looking at some handhelds at the moment and so was interested in this option. But it looks like he has a long way to go with this, seein' as even the MiSTer Pi thing has stalled. Also, I get a feeling it might be kinda big (Switch Lite size is "big" for me) so not really my kind of handheld.

We are spoilt for choice for cheap Chinese handhelds right now, I caught this video a few days ago going over the pros and cons of Anbernic's offerings. They do seem to have a form factor for everyone. Personally I love my Miyoo Mini Plus with Onion OS, very pocketable.

If you're looking to spend more there's always the FPGBC kit for solely GameBoy or the Analogue Pocket?

im looking forward to the Taki MiSTer Handheld, and its a product release i havent been this excited for in a long time!

about a year ago, i bit the bullet and bought one of those anbernic handhelds (RG405m) and it lets me play SNES on the go with all of my input latency settings id use for a PC retroarch setup, so im happy for now playing kaizo romhacks on the go. also, being able to play pico8 on a handheld is a big plus, so even with an FPGA handheld, id still use the RG405 just for that. pico8 is so much fun to explore.

but, having all the MiSTer cores in a similar portable shape with a good dpad, ergonomics (grip, buttons), and a proper modern LED screen?
the MiSTer is already a retro lovers dream, but to have all that FPGA goodness in a handheld will be amazing!

i understand this will not be appealing to a lot of the MiSTer audience who, if polls have shown, the userbase is pretty much split between half CRT users and half HDMI users. but for those of us who are content with using the MiSTer on a digital display, this upcoming handheld will be as good as it gets

That's true, and I'm currently mulling over Anbernic's RG 35XX H or 40XX H. They have just started a Halloween sale which knocks an additional 10 USD off their already pretty decent prices (so the 40XX H is 57 USD).

I'm mostly looking to use it for microcomputer cores so, yes, MiSTer would be unbeatable in this regard (even though the lack of keyboard is a constant problem with handhelds). But, like I said earlier, we might be in for a very long wait and even if it happens the availability will be most likely super scarce, judging by what has happened with the first MiSTer Pi batch. A MiSTer handheld would be probably even more desirable to many people.

I've had some very enjoyable emulation handhelds over the last few years. The display and controls are all directly connected to the main board, and with a powerful enough chipset they don't suffer from much latency (as long as the emulated system is within the chipset's abilities).

I've got a Miyoo Mini Plus, PowKiddy RGB20S, and MagicX XU Mini M as "low end" under $50 pocket handhelds. All handle up to PS1 with no major issues and all have very nice IPS displays and solid controls.

My PowKiddy RGB30 and Anbernic RG503 are a little more powerful and with higher res screens and they can play a good chunk of the N64, Dreamcast, Saturn, and PSP libraries.

This year I bought an Anbernic RG556. Great ergonomics, wonderful 5.5" AMOLED display, solid controls, and it can emulate most of the GameCube and PS2 libraries. Everything below that is stellar.

I would love to eventually get Taki's MiSTer handheld, but these other emulation handhelds are pretty awesome.

I'll be honest - being someone who grew up in the 70s, as convenient as portable retrogaming may be (and I have enjoyed my Miyoo as well), my eyesight just isn't what it once was and it's actually a pleasure to play with "LEGO brick pixels" on a large display these days. LOL
