There are unofficial MiSTer cores being generated all the time; you can find them in "unstable-nightlies" in the MiSTer Discord.

Yes I'm well-versed on "unstable-nightlies", and I'm surprised "unstable" = "unofficial" here. No open source projects call their nightlies "unofficial" if it's done by the main maintainers. "Unofficial" would be the forks like this "SNES Save State Test core" which is a fork.

It's not done by the main maintainers; that would be MiSTer-devel https://github.com/mister-devel who don't run build automation.

MiSTer-unstable-nightlies https://github.com/MiSTer-unstable-nigh ... ion_MiSTer is a separate project handled by theypsilon.

(Incidentally, theypsilon also takes care of Update_All, which is also separate from the official MiSTer updater as it additionally pulls from external sources such as Jotego's repository and the Analogue Pocket cores)

Hi everyone.

Funny thing, I came to this forum to find info about possible future ability to save states for the Super Nes core :)

I downloaded MiSTer_unstable_20241223_154da1 but no idea what kind of file this is, no extension.

And the SNES saves states core isn't a fork. It's just a test core with some changes which (hopefully) eventually will be implemented in the offical core, once the work on it is done. I assume Paul is still working on it, besides DSP1-4 there are many special chip games left.

You rename it to MiSTer (no extension) and overwrite the one in the root of your SD card.

And the file will automatically be overwritten the next time you update, so after that you you'll have to replace it with the unstable MiSTer again.

The current official Mister Main supports the SNES save states test core.

Ok I downloaded the latest Snes core and will update the Main to latest unstable so that the bin gets automatically loaded.

Yes I am planning to do Super FX next. Unfortunately I am still waiting for a replacement for my PC mainboard for a ridiculous amount of time already and still not resolved so I can't do anything at the moment.

I have the "save state" and "load state" greyed out. I replaced the snes core by the latest file you provided but when I go to "about" it's still a 2023 version...

You have to copy the "boot1.rom" from the attached archive (25.11.2024) to your games/SNES folder.

Yes, it belongs in the root of your games/SNES folder. There should be only another bsx_bios.rom there, for the satellaview modem.

@paulbnl

I found a game that won't create a save state with your current test core: Earth Defense Force (US) / Super E.D.F. (Japan) (En), both are from the No-Intro Romset.

Works like a charm. Many thanks for this great improvement, just got my MiSTer and, since you need to enter the menu each time you want the ram to be saved (even with so-called "autosave"), I was really missing savestates.

So just want to make sure I got the steps right as I've never messed with unstable builds or in development cores before but I really really want save states in my SNES games!

Download latest unstable mister.ini from the discord/github and load that into MiSTer (Wait looks like that is no longer needed!)
Add new SNES core the SNES_ss.rbf to my cores folder
Put the boot1.rom into the games folder with all my SNES roms

Play games?

*Edit: Hmm did the above since my post has to be approved, and now when loading games on the SNES_ss core I'm just getting a black screen. I definitely have save state options in my menu but the games won't load. When I load the normal SNES core all games load just fine.

Make sure you are using MiSTer main release 20241227. (Check the version in the main menu).

Doh good catch, apparently my update script hasn't actually updated my MiSTer main in about a month for some reason, fixed now and they are working great!!! Thank you so much.

Hi, I'm trying the core and it allows me to create save states that work for me as long as I don't change games. If I turn it off, it doesn't load any savestate. In the SNES savestate folder, it doesn't create any save files, which is why when I turn off the mister, it no longer loads the saved game. What could it be? Thanks.
Ok the problem was that the core option to save states was off, I hadn't noticed
